1961 Davis Cup
The 1961 Davis Cup was the 50th edition of the Davis Cup, the most important tournament between national teams in men's tennis. 28 teams entered the Europe Zone, 7 teams entered the Americas Zone, and 7 teams entered the Eastern Zone. Ecuador, Indonesia and Morocco made their first appearances in the tournament. The United States defeated Mexico in the America Zone final, India defeated Japan in the Eastern Zone final, and Italy defeated Sweden in the Europe Zone final. In the Inter-Zonal Zone, the United States defeated India in the semifinal, and then Italy defeated the United States in the final. In the Challenge Round Italy were defeated by the defending champions Australia. The final was played at Kooyong Stadium in Melbourne, Australia on 26–28 December. Dennis Ralston
Richard Dennis Ralston (July 27, 1942 – December 6, 2020) was an American professional tennis player whose active career spanned the 1960s and 1970s. As a young player, he was coached by tennis pro Pancho Gonzales. He attended the University of Southern California (USC) and won NCAA championships under its coach George Toley. He and partner Bill Bond captured the NCAA doubles title in 1964. Mario Llamas
Mario Llamas (30 March 1928 – 17 June 2014) was a tennis player from Mexico. Career Llamas was a regular fixture on the Mexico Davis Cup team, appearing in a total of 21 ties during his career. He won 21 of his 44 rubbers, 15 of them in singles. In the 1962 Davis Cup, Llamas was a member of the team that finished as the runner-up. Although he did not play in the final against Australia, he took part in the America Zone and Inter-Zone finals. He had a win over Rod Laver in a 1959 Davis Cup match. Bernard Bartzen
Bernard "Tut" Bartzen (November 25, 1927 – July 10, 2019) was an American former tennis player in the mid-20th century, who later became a winning college tennis coach. Biography Born in 1927 in Austin, Texas, Bartzen moved with his family to San Angelo when he was 5 years old. He won three Texas state high school titles — two in singles and one in doubles — and the National Interscholastic singles championship. Bartzen attended the College of William & Mary, where the left-hander posted a 50–0 singles record. He also won the NCAA doubles title with Fred Kovaleski in 1948. Bartzen went on the American tennis circuit and was ranked in the top 10 nine straight years (1953–1961), two of them at No. 2 (1959 and 1960). Rafael Osuna
Rafael Osuna Herrera (15 September 1938 – 4 June 1969), nicknamed "El Pelón" (The Bald), was a former world No. 1 tennis player, and an Olympian. He was born in Mexico City, and is best remembered for his singles victory at the U.S. Open Championships in 1963, winning the 1960 and 1963 Wimbledon Doubles championships, the 1962 U.S. Open Championships doubles, and for leading Mexico to its only Davis Cup Final round appearance in 1962. He is the only Mexican to date to be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame, in 1979. Chuck McKinley
Charles Robert McKinley Jr. (January 5, 1941 – August 11, 1986) was an American former world no. 1 men's amateur tennis champion of the 1960s. He is remembered as an undersized, hard-working dynamo, whose relentless effort and competitive spirit led American tennis to the top of the sport during a period heavily dominated by Australians. McKinley won the 1963 Men's Singles Championship at Wimbledon. At the end of 1963, McKinley was ranked world No. 1 amateur by Ned Potter and an Ulrich Kaiser panel of 13 experts. He paired with Dennis Ralston to win the 1963 Davis Cup, the only interruption in eight unbroken years of Australian dominance.
