1960–61 Birmingham City F.C. Season
The 1960–61 Football League season was Birmingham City Football Club's 58th in the Football League and their 34th in the First Division. They finished in 19th position in the 22-team division for the second consecutive season. They entered the 1960–61 FA Cup in the third round proper and lost to Leicester City in the fifth round after a replay, and entered the inaugural season of the Football League Cup in the second round, losing to Plymouth Argyle in the third, again after a replay. In the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, Birmingham beat Inter Milan both at home and away in the semi-final to reach their second consecutive final, but the competition schedule meant that the match itself was played in September and October 1962, well into the 1961–62 playing season. Gil Merrick
Gilbert Harold Merrick (26 January 1922 – 3 February 2010) was an English footballer and football manager. Considered one of the best goalkeepers in the UK during the mid-1950s, Merrick was one in a long line of great Birmingham City keepers which included the likes of Johnny Schofield and Harry Hibbs. Merrick spent his entire career at Birmingham City, playing more than 700 times between 1939 and 1960. He made 170 appearances during the Second World War and 485 in the Football League following the end of the war. He won 23 caps for the England national team, and played in the 1954 World Cup. After retirement as a player, he managed the club for four years. Birmingham City renamed the Railway Stand at their St Andrew's stadium the Gil Merrick Stand for the start of the 2009–10 season. Birmingham City Football Club
Birmingham City Football Club is a professional football club based in Birmingham, England. Formed in 1875 as Small Heath Alliance, it was renamed Small Heath in 1888, Birmingham in 1905, and Birmingham City in 1943. The team compete in the EFL Championship, the second level of the English football league system. Harry Hooper (footballer Born 1933)
Harold Hooper (14 June 1933 – 26 August 2020) was an English footballer who played as an outside forward. He made more than 300 appearances in the Football League, and represented England at under-23 and 'B' international level. Life and career Hooper was born in Pittington, County Durham. He played football for Hylton Colliery Juniors and for the Durham youth side before joining West Ham United in November 1950 when his father, also named Harry Hooper, was appointed assistant trainer at the club. He played for the reserve team in the London Combination before making his debut in the Football League on 3 February 1951, at the age of 17 years 7 months, at home to Barnsley in the Second Division. Johnny Gordon
John Duncan Sinclair Gordon (11 September 1931 – 26 May 2001) was an English professional footballer who played for Portsmouth and Birmingham City in the First Division as an inside forward. He made a total of 489 appearances for home-town club Portsmouth, placing him fourth in their all-time appearances list. During his three seasons at Birmingham City he was the club's top scorer in 1959–60, became their all-time top goalscorer in European competition, and played in the 1960 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup Final against Barcelona. Brian Farmer
Frederick Brian Webb Farmer (29 July 1933 – 1 June 2014) was an English professional footballer who made 249 appearances in the Football League for Birmingham City and Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic. He played at right back. Born in Wordsley, Staffordshire, Farmer joined Birmingham City in 1950 as an amateur when he was 17. He turned professional in 1954 and made his first-team debut in 1956, but was used only as cover when Jeff Hall or Ken Green were injured or on international duty. He became a first-team regular following Hall's death in 1959, but lost his place to new signing Stan Lynn some two and a half years later. He left the club in January 1962 having made 145 appearances in all competitions, of which 117 were in the First Division. An athletic coach is a person coaching in sport, involved in the direction, instruction, and training of a sports team or athlete. Emilio Aldecoa
Emilio Aldecoa Gómez (30 November 1922 – 4 September 1999) was a Spanish professional footballer who played in the English and Spanish football leagues and later managed in Spain and England. He made one appearance for the Spain national team, as a substitute in a 2–1 win against Ireland in May 1948 at the Montjuic Stadium, Barcelona. Career Refugee in England Aldecoa was born in the Zorroza neighbourhood of Bilbao, Biscay. He arrived in England as a Spanish Civil War refugee in 1937. Albert "Pat" Beasley (16 July 1913 – 27 February 1986) was an England national football team, England international association football, footballer who made more than 400 appearances in the English Football League, Football League.
