1960 F-84 Thunderstreak Crash
On 20 November 1960 a F-84F Thunderstreak of the Royal Netherlands Air Force crashed at 7:50pm into a farm in between Wjelsryp and Franeker, the Netherlands. The pilot and the family of six people who lived at the farm were all killed. The farm was destroyed and burned down and the livestock was killed. It was the worst military airplane incident in the Netherlands since the . It was outside war time, the biggest aircraft tragedy of the province Friesland. Flight and crash Af 7:30pm the F-84F Thunderstreak departed from Eindhoven Airport. At 7:48 he was flying above Makkum at a height of around 1000 metres. He would have flown in the direction of Emmen and planned to elevate another 300 metres higher. At 8:50 the plane crashed into a farm in between Wjelsryp and Franeker. The Nationaal Militair Museum (NMM) is a military museum in Soesterberg, Netherlands. It focuses on the history of the Dutch Armed Forces with emphasis on the Royal Netherlands Army and the Royal Netherlands Air Force. The Stichting Koninklijke Defensiemusea (Royal Defense Museums Foundation) oversees the museum. Geleen
Geleen (; li, Gelaen ) is a city in the southern part of the province of Limburg in the Netherlands. With 31,670 inhabitants in 2020, it is part of the municipality of Sittard-Geleen. Emmen, Netherlands
Emmen () is a municipality and town of the province of Drenthe in the northeastern Netherlands. History A planned city, Emmen arose from several small farming and peat-harvesting communities which have dotted the province of Drenthe since the Middle Ages. Traces of these communities can still be seen in the form of the villages of Westenesch, Noordbarge and Zuidbarge: they have a separate history and layout but are surrounded by the suburbs and the center of Emmen.
