1959 South American Championship (Ecuador)
The 1959 South American Championship held in Ecuador was an extra Copa América, South American Championship for the year. The tournament was contested between five teams; Bolivia national football team, Bolivia, Chile national football team, Chile, Colombia national football team, Colombia, and Peru national football team, Peru did not participate, whilst Brazil national football team, Brazil attended with a team from Pernambuco. Uruguay national football team, Uruguay won their 10th South American title. Format The format was the same as other tournaments; it was a round-robin tournament, awarding two points for a win, one for a draw, and nothing for a defeat. The team with the most points at the end was declared the tournament winner. José Sanfilippo
José Francisco "El Nene" Sanfilippo (born 4 May 1935) is a former Argentine footballer who played as a striker. Club career Sanfilippo was born in Buenos Aires. During his club career he played for San Lorenzo, Boca Juniors and Banfield in Argentina, Nacional in Uruguay, and Bangu and SC Bahia in Brazil. Sanfilippo scored his first league goal for San Lorenzo on 21 November 1953 against Banfield, and went on to score 192 league goals for them up to 1962. In 1963, Sanfilippo moved to Boca Juniors, although in 1964 he was dismissed from the club following a disciplinary incident in a match against his former club, San Lorenzo. Sanfilippo joined Uruguayan side Nacional in 1964, after the first round of the Copa Libertadores. Estadio Modelo
Estadio Modelo Alberto Spencer, also known as just Estadio Modelo, is a multi-purpose stadium in Guayaquil, Ecuador. It is currently used mostly for association football matches and it sometimes hosts games of Rocafuerte Fútbol Club, Club 9 de Octubre, Club Sport Patria, Club Deportivo Everest, Calvi Fútbol Club, Panamá Sporting Club and Club Sport Norteamérica. The stadium holds 42,000, and was opened in July 1959. After the death of Copa Libertadores all-time top scorer and Ecuadorian national Alberto Spencer in November 2006, the Ecuadorian Football Federation renamed the stadium in his honor to Estadio Modelo Alberto Spencer Herrera. The stadium was one of the hosts in the 2001 South American U-20 Championship. Juan José Pizzuti
Juan José Pizzuti (9 May 1927 – 24 January 2020) was an Argentine football player and manager. A striker, he enjoyed his most notable successes as player and manager with Racing Club de Avellaneda. Pizzuti was born in the Barracas neighbourhood of Buenos Aires and joined the Banfield youth team at the age of 14. Playing career Pizzuti made his breakthrough into the Banfield first team in 1947 at the age of 19. He became the top scorer in the Argentine league in 1949, this brought him to the attention of several major clubs and he eventually signed for River Plate in 1951. In 1952, after only one season with River, Pizzuti left to join Racing Club de Avellaneda, he became the topscorer in the Argentine league for a second time in 1953.
