1957 NAIA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament
The 1957 NAIA basketball tournament was held in March at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Missouri. The 20th annual NAIA basketball tournament featured 32 teams playing in a single-elimination format. This would be the first tournament to have seeded teams. This also means that this is the first tournament to have an ' upset'. The first upset in tournament history was when the 3 seeded West Virginia Tech lost to Villa Madonna, predecessor to today's Thomas More of Kentucky, 93–91. There were three upsets this year, including the championship game. The NAIA seeded teams 21 years prior to the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament. NAIA Men's Basketball Championship
The NAIA men's basketball national championship has been held annually by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics since 1937 NAIA basketball tournament, 1937 to determine the national champion of men's college basketball among its members in the United States and Canada. The tournament was established by James Naismith to crown a national champion for smaller colleges and universities and has been held every year since, with the exceptions of 1944 NAIA basketball tournament, 1944 (due to World War II) and 2020 (due to the COVID-19 pandemic). Since 2022, the tournament has featured 64 teams, with teams beginning play at one of sixteen regional sites with the winners of those regionals playing at the final venue. The 1959 Tournament is the first tournament to use the 16-seed system, which was used until the 2015 NAIA Division I men's basketball tournament, 2015. The championship game again featured Tennessee State University. The Tigers defeated the Lutes of Pacific Lutheran University. The Adelphi Panthers are the athletic teams that represent Adelphi University, located in Garden City, Long Island, New York, in NCAA Division II intercollegiate sports. The Ball State Cardinals men's basketball team represents Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. The Cardinals first basketball season was 1920–21.
