The 1957 Davis Cup was the 46th edition of the Davis Cup, the most important tournament between national teams in men's tennis. 24 teams entered the Europe Zone, 7 teams entered the America Zone, and 5 teams entered the Eastern Zone. Michael Green (tennis)
Michael E. Green (born 20 February 1937 in Miami, Florida) is a former amateur tennis player from the United States who competed in the 1950s and 1960s. He played on the 1956 NCAA Championship Team at UCLA and was the No. 2 player behind Mike Franks for three years.. He reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Championships in 1957 and 1958. Green played Davis Cup in 1956 and 1957, both years the team reached the Challenge Round before losing to Australia. Mike died in Ohio in 2016. Barry MacKay (tennis)
Barry MacKay (August 31, 1935 – June 15, 2012) was an American tennis player, tournament director and broadcaster. He was ranked #1 in the U.S. in 1960. While competing in college for the University of Michigan, he won the Singles title of the 1957 NCAA Men's Tennis Championship to clinch the team title for Michigan over Tulane 10 to 9, by defeating Sammy Giammalva in a 5 set Final. His teammates were: Mark Jaffe, Dick Potter, Jon Erickson, John Harris, Dale Jensen, George Korol and Dick Cohen. He was also a finalist in the 1957 NCAA Doubles competition with Dick Potter. He won 5 Big Ten Conference titles, 1956-57 (2) in singles and 1955-57 (3) in doubles. Carlos Alberto Fernandes (tennis)
Carlos Alberto Fernandes (born 6 February 1936) is a retired Brazilian tennis player. He had a good all-round game with excellent passing shots and moved fast around the court. Fernandes had a reputation for being a charismatic ladies man. He later became a coach. Career He made his Grand Slam debut at Wimbledon 1957, losing in the opening round to Jorgen Ulrich. Elias Victor Seixas Jr. ( ; ''Los Angeles Times''. August 30, 1923 – July 5, 2024) was an American tennis player. Seixas was ranked in the top ten in the U.S. on 13 occasions from 1942 to 1956. Armando Vieira
Armando Vieira (11 April 1923 – 14 January 2010) was a Brazilian tennis player. His best achievement was reaching quarterfinals of the 1951 Wimbledon Championships. In June 1951 he won the singles title at the Dutch International Championships after defeating Felicisimo Ampon in the final in three straight sets. He won the Dixie International Championships on clay in 1956. Vieira turned professional in 1958. Vieira died on 14 January 2010, at the age of 86. Sam Giammalva
Sam Giammalva Sr. (born August 1, 1934), is an American former professional tennis player in the mid-20th century. Giammalva played for the United States Davis Cup team, earning a 7–3 record in match play between 1956 and 1958. He was on the victorious U.S. teams of 1957 and 1958. In 1958, he teamed up with Barry MacKay to reach the doubles final at the U.S. Nationals. The pair fell to Alex Olmedo and Ham Richardson, 3–6, 6–3, 6–4, 6–4. It was Michigan’s MacKay who beat Giammalva, of the University of Texas at Austin, in the final of the 1957 NCAA Championship in five sets. Giammalva also reached the NCAA doubles final in 1955. He won three straight Southwest Conference singles titles from 1956-1958. Giammalva won the Eastern Grasscourt Championships in 1955, defeating Seixas, Nielsen, and Shea to win the title. Longwood Cricket Club is a tennis and former cricket club based in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, United States. It is the site of the first Davis Cup competition.
