1955 Louisiana Highway Renumbering
In 1955, Louisiana passed a law that undertook a comprehensive revision to the state highway classification and numbering system. The new system designated roads by importance to travel patterns and rectified the previous numbering system under new unified designations. History Highway numbers in Louisiana first appeared in 1921, per Act 95 of the 1921 Special Session of the Louisiana Legislature. Routes 1 through 98 were defined that year. These first 98 routes remained consistent throughout the pre-1955 era. The Louisiana State Legislature (; ) is the state legislature (United States), state legislature of the U.S. state of Louisiana. Shrewsbury, Louisiana
Shrewsbury is an unincorporated community in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States, along the Mississippi River and Shrewsbury Road about 1 mile upriver from the border of the city of New Orleans. The name came into use in the mid-19th century, and became less commonly used towards the end of the 20th century, when surrounding communities of unincorporated Jefferson grew together as a suburb of New Orleans. The area is now generally known as Old Jefferson and is part of the Greater New Orleans Metropolitan area. During the early 20th century, Shrewsbury Road was an official link in the Jefferson Highway (State Route 1, and later U.S. Route 61) and provided the main automobile route into New Orleans via Metairie Road. Interstate 12
Interstate 12 (I-12) is an intrastate Interstate Highway located entirely within the US state of Louisiana. It spans a total of in an east–west direction from I-10 in Baton Rouge to an interchange with both I-10 and I-59 in Slidell. Along the way, it passes through the city of Hammond, where it intersects I-55 and US Route 51 (US 51). It also serves the cities of Ponchatoula and Denham Springs, as well as the St. Tammany Parish cities of Covington and Mandeville. Interstate 59 (I-59) is an Interstate Highway located in the southeastern United States. It is a north–south route that spans from a junction with I-10 and I-12 at Slidell, Louisiana, to a junction with I-24 near Wildwood, Georgia. The highway connects the metropolitan areas of New Orleans, Louisiana; Birmingham, Alabama; and Chattanooga, Tennessee, running closely parallel to the older U.S. Route 11 (US 11) corridor for the entire distance. Approximately one-third of the route, spanning from Meridian, Mississippi, to Birmingham, Alabama, overlaps that of the east–west I-20. Louisiana Highway 59 (LA 59) is a state highway located in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana. It runs in a north–south direction from U.S. Highway 190 (US 190) in Mandeville to LA 21 north of Abita Springs. The highway is the most direct connection between the city of Mandeville and the town of Abita Springs. It also connects both places with Interstate 12 (I-12) roughly halfway between the two. Shreveport ( ) is a city in the U.S. state of Louisiana. Interstate 49 (I-49) is a north–south Interstate Highway with multiple segments. The original portion is entirely within Louisiana with an additional signed portion extending from Interstate 220 (Louisiana), I-220 in Shreveport, Louisiana, Shreveport to the Arkansas state line, three newer sections are in Arkansas, and one section in Missouri. Its southern terminus is in Lafayette, Louisiana, at Interstate 10 in Louisiana, I-10 while its northern terminus is in Kansas City, Missouri, at Interstate 435, I-435 and Interstate 470 (Missouri), I-470. Louisiana Highway 6 (LA 6) is a state highway located in western central Louisiana. It runs in an east–west direction from the Texas state line southwest of Many to U.S. Highway 71 (US 71) and U.S. Highway 84 (US 84) in Clarence. The route connects Many and Natchitoches, the seats of the two parishes it traverses, Sabine and Natchitoches.
