1947–48 Illinois Fighting Illini Men's Basketball Team
The 1947–48 Illinois Fighting Illini men's basketball team represented the University of Illinois. Regular season After 11 seasons that included three Big Ten Conference championships and a trip to the NCAA tournament, Doug Mills removed himself as head coach of the Fighting Illini, however; he remained as the University of Illinois athletic director until 1966. Replacing Mills was a former Illini player, Harry Combes. Combes was a senior during Mills' first season with the Fighting Illini, a team that won the conference championship. During Combes' 20 years as head coach, the Illini won 316 games while losing only 150, a .678 winning percentage. During conference play, his teams won 174 times while only losing 104 games. Combes still owns several Illini coaching records including winning 4 conference championships. Harry Combes
Harry Combes (March 3, 1915 – November 13, 1977), a native of Monticello, Illinois, served as head men's basketball coach at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Illinois between 1947 and 1967. Biography Combes played high school basketball for Monticello High School (Illinois), Monticello High School, where he led his teams to an overall combined record of 72–9 when he graduated in 1933. A three-year letterwinner, Combes was also a star player for the Illinois Fighting Illini men's basketball, Illini from 1935 to 1937 and helped lead Illinois to both its Big Ten titles in the 1930s. Wally Osterkorn
Walter Raymond Osterkorn (July 6, 1928 – January 11, 2012) was an American professional basketball player. A 6'5" forward from the University of Illinois, Osterkorn began his pro career with the St. Paul Lights of the National Professional Basketball League during the 1950–51 season. When St. Paul folded 20 games into the season, he was obtained by the Sheboygan Red Skins, who at that time were in their 13th season of operation, the longest-running professional basketball franchise in the nation. Osterkorn played the final 19 games for Sheboygan and helped the Red Skins to a league-best 29–16 record. He was named to the NPBL's second team as a forward after averaging 13 points per game, sixth-best in the league. Warren is a village in Jo Daviess County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,323 at the 2020 census, down from 1,428 at the 2010 census. Warren was named after Warren Burnett, the first male child born at the site. Stephen Decatur High School was a public high school in Decatur, Illinois, United States, which existed from 1862 to 2000. Stephen Decatur High School was simply known as Decatur High School until 1957, when the city's only high school was joined by Lakeview High School (a small rural district absorbed by consolidation), and MacArthur and Eisenhower High Schools, which were newly constructed to accommodate the student population that was exploding as a result of the post-World War 2 "baby boom". The school, like the city, was named after Stephen Decatur, Jr. one of the great naval heroes of the post- Revolutionary War era.
