1939–40 Australia Rugby Union Tour Of Britain And Ireland
The 1939–40 Australia rugby union tour of Britain and Ireland commenced with the departure of the Australian squad by ship from Sydney, Australia on 21 July 1939. The team is remembered as The Second Wallabies, however their tour was prematurely ended by Britain's declaration of war on Nazi Germany just two days after the team arrived in the UK on 2 September 1939. The side played only one match - at Bombay in India during their return journey. The tour was the first full scale trip to the British Isles attempted by the Australian national side since the First Wallaby tour of 1908 and the 1927/8 Waratah Tour (which has retrospectively been accorded national representative status). It was followed by the Third Wallaby Tour of 1947/8. Touring party The side was captained by Vay Wilson. The Manager was Dr W. F. Matthews and the Secretary was Mr J. Vay Wilson
Vayro William Wilson, Distinguished Service Cross (United Kingdom), DSC (18 January 1912 – 1962) was an Australian naval officer and a state and Australia national rugby union team, national representative rugby union player who captained the Australia national rugby union team, Wallabies in three Test matches immediately prior to the Second World War. He was selected to captain the ill-fated 1939–40 Australia rugby union tour of Britain and Ireland, which was cancelled because of the outbreak of war. Rugby career Wilson was a Queenslander whose club rugby was played at the University of Queensland Rugby Club. He came to the attention of selectors when he made the Australian Universities team in 1934 and he was in the 1938 University side, which won the 1938 Brisbane grade premiership. The 1908–09 Australia rugby union tour of the British Isles was a collection of friendly rugby union games undertaken by the Australia national rugby union team against invitational and national teams from England and Wales, as well as several games against sides from North America. This was the first Australian tour of the Northern Hemisphere and the side is sometimes referred to as the "First Wallabies". Both the New Zealand and South African teams had toured Europe in 1905 and 1906 respectively, both achieving unexpected but deserved success against club and international opposition. Between July 1947 and March 1948, the Australia national rugby union team – the Wallabies – conducted a world tour encompassing Ceylon, Britain, Ireland, France and the United States on which they played five Tests and 36 minor tour matches. It was the first such tour in twenty years, since that of the 1927–28 Waratahs tour of the British Isles, France and Canada, 1927–28 Waratahs, as the 1939–40 Australia rugby union tour of Britain and Ireland tour had been thwarted by World War II.
