1939 South American Championship
The fifteenth edition of the South American Championship was held in Lima, Peru from 15 January to 12 February. Overview The participating countries were Chile, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay. Although CONMEBOL members since 1927, this tournament was the first time the Ecuadorian side participated. Colombia –member since 1936– withdrew again from the tournament, as well as Argentina, Bolivia and Brazil. Peru won for the first time. Luis Ponce
Luis Arturo Ponce Ortiz (6 June 1910 – 10 November 1974) was a Chilean footballer. He played in eight matches for the Chile national football team from 1937 to 1939. He was also part of Chile's squad for the 1937 South American Championship. Career Ponce joined Magallanes in 1933 from , winning the Chilean Primera División in 1933, 1934, 1935 and 1938. Despite spending over two years with no playing due to an act of indiscipline, he joined Unión Española in 1943, winning the league title. Ramón Unamuno
Ramón Unamuno (4 February 1907 — 7 July 1973) was an Ecuadorian footballer and coach. He coached the Ecuador national team at the 1939 and 1947 South American Championships, and also played one match as a forward in the first of these, featuring in a 5–2 loss to Peru. During his career he also coached the Emelec and Barcelona teams, both from the Ecuador's largest city, Guayaquil. His tenure at Barcelona was particularly successful. He had two spells as manager, claiming a Serie A title during each - the first in 1960 and the second exactly a decade later. Due to his success as a coach, there is a stadium in Guayaquil named ''Estadio Ramón Unamuno''. Club de Deportes Santiago Wanderers is a football club based in Valparaíso, a founding member of the Chilean Football Federation.
