The 1937 Victorian state election was held in the Australian state of Victoria (Australia), Victoria on Saturday 2 October 1937 to elect 45 of the 65 members of the state's Victorian Legislative Assembly, Legislative Assembly. Background On 21 March 1936, Patrick Denigan of the Labor Party won the seat of Electoral district of Allandale, Allandale in a 1936 Allandale state by-election, by-election following the death of UAP member Thomas Parkin. 1937 Victorian Legislative Council Election
Elections were held in the Australian state of Victoria on Saturday 12 June 1937 to elect 17 of the 34 members of the state's Legislative Council for six year terms. MLC were elected using preferential voting. For the first time, voting became compulsory for elections for the Legislative Council, having been compulsory for the elections for the Legislative Assembly since 1927. However, the turnout increased from 10% to only 46%. Results Legislative Council Retiring Members Herbert Keck (UAP, Bendigo) died shortly before the election; no by-election was held. Thomas Parkin (7 April 1870 – 29 January 1936) was an Australian politician. He was born in Kingston to grazier John Parkin and Bridget Malone. He attended Creswick Grammar School and Geelong Grammar School and then worked for a Geelong wool firm. He served with the Victorian Mounted Rifles in the Second Boer War, in which he was wounded. He was a grazier and served on Creswick Shire Council from 1903 to 1936, with three terms as president (1908–09, 1917–18, 1926–27). Patrick Denigan
Patrick Louis Denigan (4 June 1879 – 1 November 1962) was an Australian politician. He was born at Glendonald near Creswick to farmer Thomas Denigan and Mary Agnes Downing. He was a gold miner at Allandale before becoming a farmer at Bridgewater. On 12 October 1910 he married dressmaker Annie Smith, with whom he had a daughter. He served on Marong Shire Council from 1924 to 1927 and from 1929 to 1936, and was president from 1932 to 1933. In 1936 he won a by-election for the Victorian Legislative Assembly seat of Allandale, representing the Labor Party. He held his seat until 1945, when he was defeated. Albert Dunstan
Sir Albert Arthur Dunstan, KCMG (26 July 1882 – 14 April 1950) was an Australian politician who served as the 33rd premier of Victoria from 1935 to 1943 and from 1943 to 1945 and as the third deputy premier of Victoria for five days in March 1935. A member of the Country Party, now the National Party, his term as premier was the second-longest in the state's history and the longest of any third-party premier.
