1924 Missouri Gubernatorial Election
The 1924 Missouri gubernatorial election was held on November 4, 1924 and resulted in a narrow victory for the Republican nominee, former Missouri Superintendent of Schools Sam Aaron Baker, over the Democratic candidate, Arthur W. Nelson, Socialist candidate William M. Brandt, and Socialist Labor nominee William Wesley Cox. Baker had defeated lieutenant governor Hiram Lloyd and Victor J. Miller for the Republican nomination. Sam Aaron Baker
Samuel Aaron Baker (November 7, 1874 – September 16, 1933) was an American educator and Republican politician who served as the 36th Governor of Missouri. Early life Samuel A. Baker was born in Patterson, Missouri, an unincorporated community in Wayne County to Samuel Aaron and Mary Amanda (McGhee) Baker His father, a physician and Union Army Civil War veteran, died before young Sam was born. With the family struggling financially due to his father's death, Sam often had to work and at times attended school in Mill Spring, Missouri only sporadically. William Wesley Cox (February 5, 1865 – October 29, 1948) was a presidential, vice presidential, and perennial U.S. Senate candidate of the Socialist Labor Party of America (SLP). Cox was born in Illinois, later moving to Missouri. He was the Missouri state chairman of the SLP, and was an interior decorator by profession. He was an agnostic and member of the American Civil Liberties Union. Hiram Lloyd (July 23, 1863 – September 10, 1942) was an American builder and politician. He served as lieutenant governor of Missouri from 1921 to 1925. Early life Lloyd's English parents, Thomas and Hannah (Pepper) Lloyd, came to the United States in 1860 and settled in St. Clair County, Illinois, where Thomas became the county inspector of mines. Hiram Lloyd was born on the family farm there in 1863, one of eleven children. His brother Henry Lloyd became a doctor and was at one time chief coroner of St. Louis. Lloyd moved to St. Louis in 1879 to be a carpenter's apprentice. He worked as a carpenter until 1890, when he began working as an independent contractor.
