Albert Ritchie
Albert Cabell Ritchie (August 29, 1876 – February 24, 1936) was an American lawyer and politician. A Democrat, he was the 49th governor of Maryland from 1920 to 1935. Ritchie was a conservative who campaigned for, but did not win, the presidential nomination in both 1924 and 1932. As of 2020, Ritchie is the state's longest-serving governor, with almost 15 years of service (14 years, 11 months, and 27 days) and a record four terms. Ritchie has the eighth-longest gubernatorial tenure in post-Constitutional U.S. history at days. Alexander Armstrong III (June 28, 1877 – November 20, 1939) was an American politician and lawyer from Maryland. He served as Attorney General of Maryland from 1919 to 1923. He was the Republican candidate for Maryland Governor in the 1923 election. Early life Alexander Armstrong III was born on June 28, 1877, in Hagerstown, Maryland, to Elizabeth Key (née Scott) and Alexander Armstrong. Armstrong graduated as valedictorian from Hagerstown High School. He graduated from Princeton University with a Bachelor of Arts in 1899 and a Master of Arts in 1900. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School with a Bachelor of Laws in 1903. He was admitted to the bar in 1904. Career Armstrong practiced law in Hagerstown and Baltimore. Maryland Gubernatorial Elections
Maryland gubernatorial elections have been held since statehood in 1867 to directly elect the Governor of Maryland and the officers that work with the winner candidate. After the initial election was held in November 5 1867, when Oden Bowie became the first Governor of Maryland, each subsequent election was held every four years in November. The candidates for the elections are previously selected in July of the same year in the Primary elections in Maryland, but the difference with the primaries is that in the General election voters can select candidates from any party since all parties are present in the voters ballot. 1923 United States Gubernatorial Elections
United States gubernatorial elections were held in 1923, in four states. Kentucky, Louisiana and Mississippi hold their gubernatorial elections in odd numbered years, every 4 years, preceding the United States presidential election year. In Maryland, the usual four-year term was reduced to three years as a one-off, so that from 1926 the elections would be held in an even-numbered year rather than as previously in the odd numbered year preceding the United States presidential election year.
