1920 Chicago Cardinals Season
The 1920 Chicago Cardinals season was the teams' inaugural season in the American Professional Football Association (soon to be the National Football League). Although the Cardinals' existence traced back as far as 1899, this was their first season as a member of the American Professional Football Association. The team was also known as the Racine Cardinals in this period, a name borrowed from Racine Avenue, location of Normal Park in Chicago, where the team played its home games. In an effort to reduce confusion and capitalize on the name of a major metropolis, the name of the team was officially changed to "Chicago Cardinals" by owner Chris O'Brien on October 20, 1920, however. Their final two games of the season against the Chicago Stayms Foresters were played after the APFA season was officially over and did not count towards the standings. Chris O'Brien (American Football)
Christopher O'Brien (October 23, 1881 – June 3, 1951) was a Chicago, Illinois pro football franchise owner. He was the owner of the Chicago Cardinals (later known as the St. Louis Cardinals, and now the Arizona Cardinals), and has been called the "Father of Professional Football in Chicago". O'Brien was also a co-founder of the American Professional Football Association (renamed the National Football League in 1922) by representing the Cardinals (then called the Racine Cardinals) at the September 17, 1920, league meeting at Ralph Hay's Hupmobile dealership in Canton, Ohio. Early Cardinals ownership In 1898, O'Brien organized the Morgan Athletic Club. He and his brother Pat also played on the squad. Douglas Park (Rock Island)
Douglas Park is a public park located at 18th Avenue and 10th Street in Rock Island, Illinois. A former National Football League venue, Douglas Park was the site of the first-ever National Football League game on September 26, 1920. The Rock Island neighborhood that is today called Douglas Park dates back to the 1830s, with the athletic park being constructed in 1904 to 1905 and utilized for football beginning in 1907. The stadium was home to the Rock Island Independents from 1907 until 1925, one of the original franchises of the National Football League (1920–1925). The 1920 Chicago Tigers season was their sole season in the National Football League. The team finished 2–5–1, tying them for eleventh in the league. Offseason The Chicago Tigers were formed in 1920. After the 1919 season, representatives of four Ohio League, a loose organization of professional football teams, teams—the Canton Bulldogs, the Cleveland Tigers, the Dayton Triangles, and the Akron Pros—called a meeting on August 20, 1920, to discuss the formation of a new league. At the meeting, they tentatively agreed on a salary cap and pledged not to sign college players or players already under contract with other teams. A drop kick is a type of kick in various codes of football. The Rochester Jeffersons were an American football team based in Rochester, New York from 1898 to 1925. The team was a founding member of the National Football League (NFL), in which they played from 1920 to 1925.
