Megacheira ("great hands", also historically great appendage arthropods) is an extinct class of predatory arthropods defined by their possession of spined "great appendages". Their taxonomic position is controversial, with studies either considering them stem-group euarthropods, or stem-group chelicerates. The homology of the great appendages to the cephalic appendages of other arthropods is also controversial. Uncontested members of the group were present in marine environments worldwide from the lower Cambrian to the upper Ordovician. Morphology Megacheirans are defined by their possession of uniramous "great appendages", which are their first pair of head appendages. ''Thrinaxodon'' is an extinct genus of cynodonts which lived in what are now South Africa and Antarctica during the Late Permian - Early Triassic. ''Thrinaxodon'' lived just before, during, and right after the Permian–Triassic mass extinction event. It is known from a single species, ''T. liorhinus''. ''Emydops'' is an extinct genus of dicynodont therapsids from the Middle Permian to Late Permian of what is now South Africa. The genus is generally small and herbivorous, sharing the dicynodont synapomorphy of bearing two tusks. In the following years, the genus grew to include fourteen species. Many of these species were erected on the basis of differences in the teeth and the positioning of the frontal and parietal bones. A 2008 study narrowed ''Emydops'' down to two species, ''E. arctatus'' (first described by English paleontologist Richard Owen as ''Kistecephalus arctatus'' in 1876) and the newly described ''E. oweni''. ''Endothiodon'' (/ɛndoʊθiːoʊdɔːn/ "inner tooth" from Greek endothi (ἔνδοθῐ), "within", and odon (ὀδών), "tooth", most likely named for the characteristic of the teeth being placed internally to the maxilla) is an extinct genus of medium to large dicynodont from the Late Permian. Like other dicynodonts, ''Endothiodon'' was an herbivore, but it typically lacked the two tusks that characterized most other dicynodonts and instead had long rows of teeth inset in the jaws that replaced in waves. ''Yohoia'' is an extinct genus of megacheiran arthropod from the Cambrian period that has been found as fossils in the Burgess Shale formation of British Columbia, Canada. The type species, ''Yohoia tenuis'', was described in 1912 by Walcott, who considered it an anostracan crustacean. 711 specimens of ''Yohoia'' are known from the Greater Phyllopod bed, where they comprise 1.35% of the community. In 2015, Conway Morris ''et al.'' reported another species, ''Y. utahana'', from the Marjum Formation, Utah. Description Fossil specimens of ''Yohoia'' range in size from 7 to 23 mm, they have a head shield which is followed by 13 trunk tergites, or plates. ''Waptia'' is an extinct genus of marine arthropod from the Middle Cambrian of North America. It grew to a length of , and had a large bivalved carapace and a segmented body terminating into a pair of tail flaps. It was an active swimmer and likely a predator of soft-bodied prey. It is also one of the oldest animals with direct evidence of brood care. ''Waptia fieldensis'' is the only species classified under the genus ''Waptia'', and is known from the Burgess Shale ''Lagerstätte'' of British Columbia, Canada. Specimens of ''Waptia'' are also known from the Spence Shale of Utah, United States.
