The 1907 Oklahoma elections were held on September 17, 1907, to elect every political office in the soon-to-be-formed U.S. State of Oklahoma. Evan Dhu Cameron was an American politician and educator who served as the first Oklahoma Superintendent of Public Instruction from 1907 to 1911 and as the Oklahoma Territory Superintendent of Public Instruction from 1894 to 1897. Early life, education, and early career Evan Dhu Cameron was born on February 26, 1862, to Caroline Crawford and John Worth Cameron in Richmond County, North Carolina as the youngest of seven children. His family was descended from Scottish immigrants. His father was a lawyer, editor, and former military officer. He attended school in Richmond, North Carolina, later attended Trinity College, and graduated from the Dick and Dillard School of Law in 1881. He practiced law for seven years in North Carolina. James Menefee
James A. Menefee (1868 or 1869 – February 19, 1927) was an American politician who served as the first Oklahoma State Treasurer from 1907 to 1911. Menefee was active in politics in both Oklahoma Territory and later Oklahoma. He served in the Oklahoma Territorial Senate in 1905 and was the first treasurer of the Oklahoma Democratic Party after Oklahoma statehood. Biography James A. William Macklin Cross (July 4, 1847 – August 3, 1910) was an American politician who served as the first Oklahoma Secretary of State from November 16, 1907, to August 3, 1910. Early life and military career William Macklin Cross born on July 4, 1847, in Purdy, Tennessee. At fourteen he joined Confederate States Army, serving in the 154th Tennessee Infantry Regiment as a drummer in Company K. He fought alongside his father at the Battle of Shiloh where his father was killed and he was captured. After a prisoner of war exchange, Cross returned to service under Gen. Joseph E. Johnston.
