The Black Imp
''The Black Imp'' () is a 1905 French silent trick film by Georges Méliès. It was sold by Méliès's Star Film Company and is numbered 683–685 in its catalogues. Synopsis A mischievous magic imp cavorts around inside of a hotel room, jumping from the bed to the table, and then, from the chair to an expensive couch. A respectable resident arrives escorted by the landlady and her husband, and before long, strange things begin to occur. Articles of furniture magically move from place to place, and even disappear entirely before their eyes. In the end, the mischievous imp materializes before the startled guests, causing a major emotional shock. Production Méliès appears in the film as the distinguished hotel guest. The special effects include pyrotechnic techniques as well as many substitution splices; there are 61 substitution splices in the moving chair sequence alone. Cecil Hepworth
Cecil Milton Hepworth (19 March 1874 – 9 February 1953) was a British film director, film producer, producer and screenwriter. He was among the founders of the Cinema of the United Kingdom, British film industry and continued making films into the 1920s at his Hepworth Studios. In 1923 his company Hepworth Pictures, Hepworth Picture Plays went into receivership. His works include ''Alice in Wonderland (1903 film), Alice in Wonderland'' (1903), the first film adaptation of Lewis Carroll's children's book ''Alice's Adventures in Wonderland''. History Hepworth was born in Lambeth, in present-day South London. His father, Thomas Cradock Hepworth, was a famous magic lantern showman and author. Cecil Hepworth became involved in the early stages of British filmmaking, working for both Birt Acres and Charles Urban, and wrote the first British book on the subject in 1897. The film features Hepworth's baby daughter Elizabeth being bathed and dressed by her nurse, and was categorised by Hepworth as a "Domestic Scene". Marie-Georges-Jean Méliès ( , ; 8 December 1861 – 21 January 1938) was a French magic (illusion), magician, toymaker, actor, and filmmaker. He led many technical and narrative developments in the early days of film, cinema, primarily in the Fantasy film, fantasy and Science fiction film, science fiction genres. Méliès rose to prominence creating "trick films" and became well known for his innovative use of special effects, popularizing such techniques as substitution splices, multiple exposures, time-lapse photography, Dissolve (film), dissolves, and Color motion picture film#Tinting and hand coloring, hand-painted colour. ''An Adventurous Automobile Trip'' ( or ''Le Raid Paris–Monte Carlo en deux heures'') is a 1904 French silent comic trick film directed by Georges Méliès. The film, a spoof of the devil-may-care motoring exploits of King Leopold II of Belgium, features the King engaging in a manic, implausibly fast automobile ride from Paris to Monte Carlo. The singer-comedian Harry Fragson stars as the King, supported by a large cast of stage performers from the Folies Bergère cabaret and other venues, with two cameo appearances from Méliès himself. Méliès, working in collaboration with the stage director Victor de Cottens, designed ''An Adventurous Automobile Trip'' as an innovative Folies Bergère act combining stage performance and film, with a live prologue and epilogue used to frame the filmed sequence.
