The Soviet Airborne Forces or VDV (from ''Vozdushno- desantnye voyska SSSR'', Russian: Воздушно-десантные войска СССР, ВДВ; Air-landing Forces) was a separate troops branch of the Soviet Armed Forces. First formed before the Second World War, the force undertook two significant airborne operations and a number of smaller jumps during the war and for many years after 1945 was the largest airborne force in the world. The force was split after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, with the core becoming the Russian Airborne Forces, losing divisions to Belarus and Ukraine. Alexander Kazankin
Alexander Fyodorovich Kazankin (russian: Александр Фёдорович Казанкин; 15 April 1900 – 20 March 1955) was a Red Army Lieutenant general who commanded the Soviet airborne. He fought in the Russian Civil War and graduated from the Frunze Military Academy in 1934. Kazankin led the 4th Airborne Corps during the Vyazma airborne operation. He later commanded the 1st Guards Airborne Division, 16th Guards Airborne Division, 12th Guards Rifle Corps and 39th Guards Rifle Corps. Kazankin became the Soviet airborne commander in October 1947, but was demoted to deputy commander in December 1948. After briefly becoming airborne forces commander again between January and March 1950, Kazankin successively became inspector general of the airborne forces and then deputy airborne forces inspector general before his death on 20 March 1955. Nikolay Prishchepa
Nikolay Andreyevich Prishchepa (; 14 April 1900 – 18 August 1941) was a Ukrainian Red Army major general killed in World War II. A revolutionary worker, Prishchepa joined the Red Guards and then the Red Army in early 1918, serving with a railway unit during the Russian Civil War and the Polish–Soviet War. He became a junior commander during the early 1920s, serving with units stationed in Ukraine. Prishchepa held staff and command positions during the late 1930s and became commander of the 61st Rifle Division (Soviet Union), 61st Rifle Division as the Red Army expanded before Operation Barbarossa. He led the division in a temporarily successful counterattack during the Battle of Smolensk (1941), Battle of Smolensk, but died of severe wounds received while attempting to escape from encirclement several weeks later. Konstantin Aleksandrovich Vialov (1900–1976) was a 20th-century Russian artist. Biography Vialov studied textile design at the Stroganov Moscow State Academy of Arts and Industry, Russia from 1914 to 1917. After the Russian Revolution, he continued his studies at the state art and technical schools Svomas and Vkhutemas, studying under Wassily Kandinsky, Vladimir Tatlin, Aristarkh Lentulov, and David Shterenberg. From 1922 to 1925, Vialov served as head of the Studio of Visual Arts for Teenagers, operated by Narkompros. Vialov joined the Artists' Union of the USSR in 1932, the year of its founding, and from 1941 to 1945 he designed a series of posters for the Telegraph Agency of the Soviet Union (TASS), which were exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago in 2011 as part of the exhibition ''Windows on the War: Soviet TASS Posters at Home and Abroad, 1941–1945.''
