The 1899 Princeton Tigers football team represented Princeton University in the 1899 college football season. The team finished with a 12–1 record and was retroactively named as the national champion by the Billingsley Report and Parke H. Davis. Harvard compiled a 10–0–1 record and was selected as the national champion by three other selectors. They outscored their opponents 185 to 21. William Hanford "Big Bill" Edwards (February 23, 1877 – January 4, 1943) was an American football player who played guard for the Princeton Tigers football team of Princeton University from 1896 to 1899. Biography He was born on February 23, 1877, in Lisle, New York. After graduation, he became an official, and in 1916 wrote a book entitled ''Football Days'', which is perhaps the most extensive first-hand account of American college football in the 19th century. In 1906, Edwards was the referee for the first game of the "Ohio League" championship between the Canton Bulldogs and the Massillon Tigers. The two-game series was the setting for a game-rigging scandal that eventually resulted in the demise of both teams. During the scandal, members of the Bulldogs were accused of throwing the championship to the Tigers. The Plain (West Point)
The Plain is the parade field at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. The flat terrain of the Plain is in contrast to the varied and hilly terrain of the remainder of the campus. The Plain rises approximately above the Hudson River and has been the site of the longest continually occupied U.S. Army garrison in America since 1778. In its early years, the entire academy was located on the Plain and it was used for varying activities ranging from drill and mounted cavalry maneuvers to an encampment site for summer training to a sports venue.
