1899 Harvard Crimson Football Team
The 1899 Harvard Crimson football team was an American football team that represented Harvard University as an independent during the 1899 college football season. In its first season under head coach Benjamin Dibblee, the Crimson compiled a 10–0–1 record, shut out 10 of 11 opponents, and outscored all opponents by a total of 210 to 10. There was no contemporaneous system in 1899 for determining a national champion. However, Harvard was retroactively named as the national champion by the Helms Athletic Foundation, Houlgate System, and National Championship Foundation. Princeton compiled a 12–1 record and was named the national champion by two other selectors. Benjamin Dibblee
Benjamin Harrison Dibblee (July 8, 1876 – November 11, 1945) was an American college football player and coach. He played halfback for Harvard University from 1896 to 1898, and was a consensus All-American in 1897 and 1898. Dibblee served as the head football coach for Harvard from 1899 to 1900, compiling a 20–1–1. His 1899 team was retroactively recognized as a national champion by a number of selectors. Dibblee attended preparatory school at the Groton School where he played on the football team and took a prominent role in athletics. Dibblee was small for a football player, even by the standards of the 1890s, standing 5 feet, 8-8½ inches, and weighing only 156 pounds. He enrolled at Harvard in 1895 and played on the freshman football team that year. In 1896, he played on the varsity team where he played in one or two games at fullback. Harvard–Penn Football Rivalry
The Harvard–Penn football rivalry is an American college football rivalry between the Harvard Crimson and Penn Quakers. The first game was played in 1881. In the first 18 games played in the series, Harvard won 13 and Penn won 5. By 1958 Penn pulled even with 14 games won by each school. There was 1 tie (1940). From 1959 through 1981 Harvard dominated the series winning 20 games to Penn's winning 2 games (1963, 1972). There was 1 tie (1965). The 1899 Carlisle Indians football team represented the Carlisle Indian Industrial School as an independent during the 1899 college football season. Led by first-year head coach Pop Warner, the Indians compiled a record of 9–2 and outscored opponents 383 to 46. Frank Hudson was the quarterback and drop-kicker for the 1899 Carlisle Indian team. In a 22–10 loss to Harvard, Hudson's kicking was again a featured attraction. ''The New York Times'' reported: "And now came the feature of the game, for which everybody had been waiting. The Plain (West Point)
The Plain is the parade ground, parade field at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. The flat terrain of the Plain is in contrast to the varied and hilly terrain of the remainder of the campus. The Plain rises approximately above the Hudson River and has been the site of the longest continually occupied U.S. Army garrison in America since 1778. In its early years, the entire academy was located on the Plain and it was used for varying activities ranging from drill and mounted cavalry maneuvers to an encampment site for summer training to a sports venue.
