1880 Men's Tennis Season
The 1880 men's tennis season incorporated 44 tournaments staged in Australia, Great Britain and Ireland and the United States. The 1880 Wimbledon Championships was won by John Hartley against Herbert Lawford, in the Challenge Round. The season began in April Cheltenham, England and ended in October in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. Dale Womersley (tennis)
Dale Womersley (28 July 1860 – 22 August 1942) was a British tennis player active in the late 19th century. In major tournaments of the time he played at the 1880 Wimbledon Championships where he was beaten in the second round by William Renshaw. Between 1879 and 1882 he won three singles titles. Career In 1879 Womersely played his first tournament at the Essex County Cricket Club Open at Leyton, where he reached the final, but lost to his brother Nalton Wormersly.Tennis Archives In 1880 he won his first title at the Essex County Cricket Club Tournament against Richard. Irish Lawn Tennis Championships
The Irish Open was a hard court tennis tournament founded in 1879 as the Irish Championships, a major tennis tournament of the late 19th to early 20th centuries. It was played at the Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club, Dublin, Ireland. Also known as the Irish Lawn Tennis Championships it remained a major tennis tournament second only to Wimbledon until at least 1902. The tournament continued to be played until 1971 under its original brand name. In 1972 it was rebranded as the Irish Open until 1983 or the Carroll's Irish Open Championships (for sponsorship reasons).
