The 1880 Nebraska gubernatorial election was held on November 2, 1880, in order to elect the Governor of Nebraska. Incumbent Republican Governor of Nebraska Albinus Nance defeated Democratic nominee Thomas Tipton, who had formerly served as a Republican US Senator from Nebraska.Nance's pp. 140–143 On election day, Republican nominee Albinus Nance won re-election by a margin of 27,070 votes against his foremost opponent, Democratic nominee Thomas Tipton, thereby holding Republican control over the office of Governor. The governor of Nebraska is the head of government of the U.S. state of Nebraska as provided by the fourth article of the Constitution of Nebraska. The officeholder is elected to a four-year term, with elections held two years after presidential elections. The governor may be elected any number of times, but not more than twice in a row. The current officeholder is Jim Pillen, a Nebraska Republican Party, Republican, who was sworn in on January 5, 2023. Governors of Nebraska must be at least 30 years old and have been citizens and residents of the state for five years before being elected. Before 1966, the governor was elected to a two-year term. The 1880 Nebraska lieutenant gubernatorial election was held on November 2, 1880, and featured incumbent Nebraska Lieutenant Governor Edmund C. Carns, a Republican, defeating Democratic nominee T. J. Hamilton as well as Greenback nominee Peter Lansing and former Democratic nominee Samuel H. Calhoun. Originally, the Democratic party had nominated Calhoun for lieutenant governor. Albinus Roberts Nance (March 30, 1848 – December 7, 1911) was an Politics of the United States, American politician. He served as a soldier during the American Civil War, and as the List of governors of Nebraska, fourth governor of Nebraska. Nance was born in La Fayette, Illinois on March 30, 1848. Thomas Tipton
Thomas Weston Tipton (August 5, 1817November 26, 1899) was a Senator from Nebraska. Biography Tipton was born in Cadiz, Ohio, and attended Allegheny College, Meadville, Pennsylvania. He pursued classical studies and graduated from Madison College, Pennsylvania, in 1840. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1844. He was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1845. He was appointed to a position in the United States Land Office from 1849 to 1852; he then resumed the practice of law in McConnelsville, Ohio, in 1853. He was ordained a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1856. Around 1859, he moved to Brownville, Nebraska and joined the Congregational Church. He was a member of the 1859 Nebraska constitutional convention and the Nebraska Territory council in 1860.
