The (and the earlier 151 and 161 series variants) was a Japanese limited express electric multiple unit (EMU) type operated by Japanese National Railways (JNR). The is a major railway line in Japan, owned by the East Japan Railway Company (JR East). It connects Takasaki Station in Gunma Prefecture with Miyauchi Station (Niigata), Miyauchi Station in Niigata Prefecture, linking the northwestern Kanto region and the Sea of Japan coast of the Chūbu region. Tōkaidō Main Line
The Tōkaidō Main Line () is one of the most important railway corridors in Japan, connecting the major cities of Tokyo and Kobe via Shizuoka (city), Shizuoka, Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka. The line, with termini at Tokyo Station, Tokyo and Kōbe Station (Hyogo), Kobe stations, is long, not counting its many freight feeder lines around the major cities. The high-speed Tokaido Shinkansen, Tōkaidō Shinkansen largely parallels the line. Stopping at every station, the ''Kodama'' is the slowest Shinkansen service for trips between major cities such as Tokyo and Osaka.
