Irish Monarch
Monarchical systems of government have existed in Ireland from ancient times. This continued in all of Ireland until 1949, when The Republic of Ireland Act 1948, the Republic of Ireland Act removed most of Ireland's residual ties to the British monarch. Northern Ireland, as part of the United Kingdom, remains under a monarchical system of government. The office of High King of Ireland effectively ended with the Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland (1169–1171) in which the island was declared a fief of the Holy See under the Lordship of the King of England. In practice, conquered territory was divided amongst various Anglo-Norman noble families who assumed title over both the land and the people with the prior Irish inhabitants being either displaced or subjugated under the previously alien system of serfdom. Earl Of Thomond
Earl of Thomond was an hereditary title in the Peerage of Ireland. It was created twice for the O'Brien dynasty which is an ancient Irish sept native to north Munster. History and background First creation Under the Crown of Ireland Act 1542, King Henry VIII of England was created King of Ireland by the Parliament of Ireland. In consequence, all reigning monarchs and clan chiefs in Ireland were ordered to surrender their native titles in return for peerages. This surrender and regrant offer was conditional upon the adoption of Tudor customs and laws, including pledging allegiance to the Irish Crown and apostatising from the Catholic faith by accepting the articles of the state established Church of Ireland. Through surrender and regrant, the earldom of Thomond was created in 1543 for Murrough O'Brien. Muirgheas Mac Pháidín Ó Maolconaire
Muirgheas mac Pháidín Ó Maolconaire, Gaelic- Irish scribe, died 1543. He was a native of Cluain Plocáin (now Ballymulconry), parish of Kiltrustan, County Roscommon. It lies close to an inlet of the river Shannon, north of Strokestown. Ó Maolconaire wrote the Book of Fenagh in 1516/17, at Fenagh Abbey, County Leitrim. He prepared an abbreviated version in 1535, now BL Cotton Vespasian MS E II. He also wrote the vellum manuscript known as ''Leabhar gabhála'', or ''Leabhar Bhaile Uí Mhaoilchonaire do sgríobh Muirghios mac Paídín Uí Mhaoilchonaire as Liobhar na hUidhre''. Thomas Butler, 1st Baron Cahir
Thomas Butler, 1st Baron Cahir or Caher (died 1558) was an Irish peer. Biography Butler was the son of Catherine Power and Edmund Butler, in turn a descendant of James "Gallda" Butler. Thomas Butler was elevated to the peerage of Ireland, on 10 November 1543, by the title of Baron of Caher. He married Eleanor Butler, fifth daughter of Piers Butler, 8th Earl of Ormond. He lived in Cahir Castle and ruled much of the barony of Iffa and Offa West. He died in 1558 and was succeeded by his only surviving son and heir, Edmund Butler, 2nd Baron Cahir who died himself two years later. As Butler had no legitimate male heirs, the title became extinct. Earl of Clanricarde ( ; ) is a title that has been created twice in the Peerage of Ireland, first in 1543 and again in 1800. The former creation became extinct in 1916 while the 1800 creation is extant and held by the Marquess of Sligo since 1916. Ulick na gCeann Burke, 12th Clanricarde or Mac William Uachtar, 1st Earl of Clanricarde ( ; died 1544; styled MacWilliam, and na-gCeann, meaning "of the Heads", "having made a mount of the heads of men slain in battle which he covered up with earth") was an Irish noble and son of Richard Mór Burke, 9th Clanricarde (d. 1530) by a daughter of Madden of Portumna. Biography Ulick succeeded his father to the headship of his clan, and held estates in County Galway. In March 1541 he wrote to Henry VIII, lamenting the degeneracy of his family, which had rebelled against England in the mid-14th century, and "which have been brought to Irish and disobedient rule by reason of marriage and with those Irish, sometime rebels, near adjoining to me", and placing himself and his estates in the king's hands. Dromoland Castle () is a castle, located near Newmarket-on-Fergus in County Clare, Ireland. It is operated as a five-star luxury hotel with a golf course, with its restaurant, the "Earl of Thomond", being awarded a Michelin star in 1995, under head chef Jean Baptiste Molinari. Castle History Dromoland Castle was the ancestral home of the O'Briens, Barons of Inchiquin, who are one of the few native Gaelic families of royal blood, and direct descendants of Brian Boroimhe (Boru), High King of Ireland in the eleventh century. There were six early Barons Inchiquin in Ireland between 1543 and 1654. The title was granted to Murrough O'Brien, the brother of Conor O'Brien, King of Thomond, when he surrendered his Irish royalty to King Henry VIII in 1543.
