Český Les Protected Landscape Area
Český les Protected Landscape Area (abbreviated as Český les PLA; , abbreviated as ''CHKO Český les'') is a protected landscape area in the Czech Republic. It lies in the western part of the Plzeň Region along the border with the German state of Bavaria. It protects the most valuable parts of the Upper Palatinate Forest () mountain range. Český les PLA was declared in 2005 as the 25th protected landscape area of the Czech Republic. Most of the area was vacated after the forced expulsion of the predominantly German inhabitants after the World War II. Until the fall of the Communist regime in 1989 it was part of the Western border zone, virtually uninhabited. Due to this development it is today an area little affected by human activities, a mosaic of deep forests, meadows and forests. Plzeň Region or Plzeňský Region (also known as Pilsen Region; ) is an Regions of the Czech Republic, administrative unit () of the Czech Republic, located in the western part of the historical land of Bohemia and named after the capital, Plzeň. Pavlova Huť Nature Reserve
Pavlova Huť is a nature reserve within the Český les Protected Landscape Area in the western part of the Plzeň Region of the Czech Republic. It is named after a former glass works village (founded around 1740, destroyed after 1945) of the same name which was located nearby. It lies along the boundary with Germany. The reserve protects a well-preserved bog spruce forest with typical fauna and flora. 100% of the area is forested, mainly by spruce. It is one of few places in the Český les PLA where a spruce forest is native. Slate
Slate is a fine-grained, foliated, homogeneous, metamorphic rock derived from an original shale-type sedimentary rock composed of clay or volcanic ash through low-grade, regional metamorphism. It is the finest-grained foliated metamorphic rock. Foliation may not correspond to the original sedimentary layering, but instead is in planes perpendicular to the direction of metamorphic compression. Gneiss (pronounced ) is a common and widely distributed type of metamorphic rock.
