Ólafur Ísleifsson (born 10 February 1955 in Reykjavík) is an Icelandic economist and politician from the Centre Party (Iceland), Centre Party. Reykjavík is the Capital city, capital and largest city in Iceland. It is located in southwestern Iceland on the southern shore of Faxaflói, the Faxaflói Bay. Centre Party (Iceland)
The Centre Party () is a Nordic agrarian, populist and conservative political party in Iceland, established in September 2017. It split from the Progressive Party due to leadership disputes, when two factions decided to band up as a new party before the 2017 Icelandic parliamentary election. Ideology A self-proclaimed liberal and centrist party, the party is generally considered by some conservative and populist. The party proposes to reform the state's banking sector, maintaining government ownership of Landsbankinn, while reclaiming the state's stake in Arion Bank, which is controlled by hedge funds, and redistributing a third of its shares among Icelanders. Reykjavík North (Althing Constituency)
Reykjavík North () is one of the six multi-member constituencies of the Althing, the national legislature of Iceland. The constituency was established in 2003 when the existing Reykjavík constituency was split into two. The constituency currently elects nine of the 63 members of the Althing using the open party-list proportional representation electoral system. At the 2024 parliamentary election it had 47,600 registered electors. History In March 1843 King Christian VIII of Denmark issued a royal decree converting the Althing into a consultative assembly. The (; ), anglicised as Althingi or Althing, is the supreme national parliament of Iceland. It is the oldest surviving parliament in the world. The Althing was founded in 930 at (' thing fields' or 'assembly fields'), about east of what later became the country's capital, Reykjavík. After Iceland's union with Norway in 1262, the Althing lost its legislative power, which was not restored until 1904 when Iceland gained home rule from Denmark. For 641 years, the Althing did not serve as the parliament of Iceland; ultimate power rested with the Norwegian, and subsequently the Danish throne. 2017 Icelandic Parliamentary Election
Early parliamentary elections were held in Iceland on 28 October 2017. On 15 September 2017, the three-party coalition government collapsed after the departure of Bright Future over a scandal involving Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson's father writing a letter recommending a convicted child sex offender have his "honour restored". Bjarni subsequently called for a snap election, which was officially scheduled for 28 October 2017 following the dissolution of the Althing. Though many opinion polls in the run-up to the election indicated an increase in support for the Left-Green Movement, the Independence Party retained its position as the Althing's largest party. Klaustur Affair
The Klaustur Affair, also known in Iceland as Klaustur Recordings ''(Klaustursupptökurnar)'' or Klausturgate was a political scandal in Iceland triggered by audio recordings of a group Althing parliamentarians made without their knowledge at the Reykjavík bar ''Klaustur'' in late November, 2018. In the recordings, the parliamentarians make sexist remarks about some of their colleagues and discuss the appointment of an ambassador as a political favour.
