''Étalon de Yennenga'' (English: Stallion of Yennenga) is an award bestowed to distinguished individuals involved with the Burkinabe's silver screen, awarded by the biannual Panafrican Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou (FESPACO), in recognition of the grand prize for the Best Film. First commenced in 1972, it is considered the most prestigious award in Cinema of Africa, African cinema. History The 'Étalon de Yennenga' means Stallion of Yennenga and refers to Princess Yennenga. The Mossi people, Mossi people, the main ethnic group in Burkina Faso, consider her a founder of the Mossi Kingdoms. The story of Yennenga dates back to the beginning of the 12th century in the Kingdom of Dagbon. King Naa Gbewaa, Nedega's daughter, Yennenga, was a horse-woman, and adept at using javelins, spears and bows. The physical award resembles Yennenga with her horse and weapon. FESPACO
The Panafrican Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou (, or FESPACO) is a film festival in Burkina Faso, held biennially in Ouagadougou, where the organization is based. It accepts for competition only films by African filmmakers and chiefly produced in Africa. FESPACO is scheduled in March every second year, two weeks after the last Saturday of February. Its opening night is held in the Stade du 4-Août, the national stadium. The festival offers African film professionals the chance to establish working relationships, exchange ideas, and to promote their work. FESPACO's stated aim is to "contribute to the expansion and development of African cinema as means of expression, education and awareness-raising". It has also worked to establish a market for African films and industry professionals. Kwaw Paintsil Ansah (born 1941) is a Ghanaian film-maker, whose work as writer, director or producer includes ''Love Brewed in the African Pot'' in 1980 and '' Heritage Africa'' in 1989. His first feature, ''Love Brewed in the African Pot'', earned immediate popular and critical acclaim throughout English-speaking Africa. Med Hondo (born Mohamed Abid; 4 May 1935 – 2 March 2019) was a Moroccan-born French director, producer, screenwriter, and actor. Considered a founding father of African cinema, he is known for his controversial films dealing with issues such as race relations and colonization. ''Sarraounia'' is a 1986 historical drama film written and directed by Med Hondo. It is based on a novel of the same name by Nigerien author Abdoulaye Mamani, who co-wrote the screenplay. The novel and film concern the real-life Battle of Lougou between Azna (remnant animist-Hausa people) queen Sarraounia and the advancing French Colonial Forces of the Voulet-Chanoine Mission in 1899.
