''Songs in Red and Gray'' is the sixth studio album by American singer-songwriter Suzanne Vega. It was released on September 25, 2001, by A&M Records. Music and lyrics On ''Songs in Red and Gray'', Vega returns to her signature acoustic folk-pop sound, shedding the experiments she had done in the 1990s with her husband, record producer Mitchell Froom. New producer Rupert Hine shows some traces of his past work with '80s new wave bands by employing electronic beats, but mostly allows Vega's voice and guitar to dominate in a manner reminiscent of her debut album and its 1987 follow-up, ''Solitude Standing''. Most of the songs, like "Widow's Walk" and "If I Were a Weapon", deal with the dissolution of Vega's marriage with Froom. Her "calm, hushed, clear singing" belies the album's "mood of heartbroken defiance". The lyrics are "the most personally revealing songs she has written" in her career. Suzanne Nadine Vega ( Peck; born July 11, 1959) is an American singer-songwriter of Folk music, folk-inspired music. Vega's music career spans 40 years. In the mid-1980s and 1990s she released four singles that entered the Top 40 charts in the UK, "Marlene on the Wall", "Left of Center (Suzanne Vega song), Left of Center", "Luka (song), Luka" and "No Cheap Thrill". "Tom's Diner", which was originally released as an ''a cappella'' recording on Vega's second studio album, ''Solitude Standing'' (1987), was remixed in 1990 as a dance track by English electronic music, electronic duo DNA (duo), DNA with her vocals, and it became a Top 10 hit in five countries. Mitchell Froom
Mitchell Froom (born June 29, 1953) is an American musician and record producer. He was a member of the bands Gamma and Latin Playboys, and is the keyboardist for Crowded House. He has produced albums for several artists, including David LaFlamme, Richard Thompson, Los Lobos, Suzanne Vega, and Vonda Shepard. Career Froom began his career as a keyboard player in Sonoma County, California. The band Crossfire featured two keyboard players; Mitchell on one side of the stage and his brother David on the other with Gary Pihl on guitar. He also played keyboards on the Ronnie Montrose-led group Gamma's third album '' Gamma 3'', and the first two solo albums of David LaFlamme (of It's a Beautiful Day fame) titled ''White Bird'' and ''Inside Out''. Matt Johnson (born 6 November 1970 in Houston, Texas) is an American drummer who played in the band of Jeff Buckley, appearing and co-writing one song on his album ''Grace'' in 1994, as well as on subsequent live releases and EPs. Although he stopped playing with Buckley before recording began on what was to become the singer's final original album (released posthumously as ''Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk''), Johnson shares writing credits for one of its tracks. Jay Bellerose is an American drummer and percussionist known primarily for his session and live performance work. He has contributed to the work of many well-known artists. Biography Bellerose was born in Maine. A jazz enthusiast, he attended the Berklee College of Music where he worked with Paula Cole, Torsten de Winkel and others, and eventually went Los Angeles where he was part of Joe Henry's band. Bellerose has been influenced by blues and jazz, and his sound is in part derived from his vintage 1940s Slingerland Rolling Bomber kit. He often performs with shakers strapped to his ankles. Gerry Leonard (born 26 February 1962) is an Irish guitarist known for his harmonic and ambient guitar style and for his work with David Bowie, Suzanne Vega, Rufus Wainwright, Laurie Anderson, Duncan Sheik and many others. John Studebaker "Jack" Hardy (November 23, 1947 – March 11, 2011) was an American singer-songwriter and playwright based in Greenwich Village, who was influential as a writer, performer, and mentor in the North American and European folk music scenes for decades. He was cited as a major influence by Suzanne Vega, John Gorka, and others who emerged from that scene in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Hardy was the author of hundreds of songs, and toured for almost forty years. He was also the founding editor of ''Fast Folk Musical Magazine'', a periodical famous within music circles for twenty years that shipped with a full album (and later, compact disc) in each issue, whose entire catalog is now part of the Smithsonian Folkways collection.
