A former agriculture focused area outside of Valdivia, it became an industrial and residential space after the opening of the Rio Cruces Bridge in 1987. Touristic attractions

From Torobayo, visitors can drive alongside the river banks to the coastal areas near Valdivia, such as Niebla or nature preserves like Parque Oncol. The Kunstmann brewery restaurant ("La Cerveceria") is also located in the area. One of their most well known products (Torobayo Pale-Ale) carries the name of the locality.
