''Platycephalus bassensis'' the (southern sand flathead) is a predatory fish in the family (biology), family Platycephalidae. Endemic to southern Australia, the habitat is coastal areas, in shallow waters to 100 metres deep, over sand, mud and shell grit. The maximum length is 46 cm, and weight to 3.1 kilograms. A popular angling species. The specific epithet ''bassensis'' refers to Bass Strait, in southern Australia.
