in Shilbottle parish, in 1866 Newton on the Moor became a civil parish in its own right, on 1 April 1955 Greens and Glantlees, Hazon and Hartlaw and Swarland parishes were merged with Newton on the Moor, on 15 December 1987 the parish was renamed "Newton on the Moor and Swarland". In 1951 the parish (prior to the merge) had a population of 140.
