The Moscow International Film Festival (russian: Моско́вский междунаро́дный кинофестива́ль, translit. ''Moskóvskiy myezhdunaródniy kinofyestivál''; abbreviated as MIFF) is the film festival first held in Moscow in 1935 and became regular since 1959. From its inception to 1959 it was held every second year in July, alternating with the Karlovy Vary festival. The festival has been held annually since 1999. In reaction to the

History

In 1997 it was announced that the festival would be held once a year instead of bi-annually. Due to financial problems, the festival was not held in 1998. From 1999 to 2019, Nikita Mikhalkov became the president of the Festival. In 2015, the festival started to be held annually. Since 2006, the documentary program "Free Thought" has appeared in the framework of the Festival. In 2011, it was announced that the competition of documentary films in the MIFF was resumed. In reaction to the
