Hassan is originally from

. As a child, her family left their home due to the war with Sudan. The war prevented Hassan from getting an education. Hassan was still pursuing her primary education during her training for the

. Hassan was given the honor of carrying the Olympic flag as a representative of the Independent Olympic Athletes at the opening ceremony. She competed in the 400 metre distance at the games, finishing with a time of 61.72 seconds. In June 2016, Hassan competed at the
