Miller was born in Lansing, Michigan. He is one of ten members of his extended family to play hockey at Michigan State University for the Spartans men's ice hockey team.

Career

Miller began his NHL career with the

during the 1984–85 season. He was traded to the

during the 1986–87 season in a trade that sent former first-round pick Bobby Carpenter to the Rangers. From 2001 to 2003 he served as an assistant coach with the New York Islanders.
