In the 2011 decree that created the region, Guémon was referred to alternatively as the region of "Yémahin".Décret n° 2011-263 du 28 septembre 2011 portant organisation du territoire national en Districts et en Régions
Since its creation, the region has more commonly been referred to as "Guémon".
