In the 2011 decree that created the region, Grands-Ponts included
Abidjan Department Abidjan Department (french: Département d'Abidjan, ) is a department of Ivory Coast. It is the sole department in Abidjan Autonomous District: the territory of the department and the district are the same.Décret n° 2011-263 du 28 septembre 2011 portant organisation du territoire national en Districts et en Régions
Shortly thereafter, it was determined that Abidjan Autonomous District and Abidjan Department would be co-extensive in territory; since that time, the name "Grands-Ponts" has been used exclusively.
