Life

He came from a banking family and attended the

, where he studied medicine and the natural sciences. He later became a pupil of Carl Steffeck. From 1856 to 1863, he lived in Paris, where he was a student of

. He travelled to Italy in 1864 and devoted himself to studying Fifteenth Century art. He settled in Berlin in 1865. Beginning in 1868, he was an instructor in the school at the
