The party was founded on 14 September 2005, as ''Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam'' (DMDK) by

Ramu Vasanthan, who was the state president of the fans' forum, took charge as the general secretary of the party. On 17 July 2009, he died of a cardiac arrest.
