Bernard Mary, Principal of ACC, initiated a private college, so called ASB in 1969 and subsequently, the Brothers of St. Gabriel in Thailand developed and transformed the school to Assumption School of Business, the english program-intensive business school. In 1972, Rev. Bro. Prathip M. Komolmas made use of a piece of land in Hua Mak to establish Assumption Business Administration College (ABAC) accredited by the Bureau of University Affairs. Rev. Bro. Sompong Jirananda was appointed the first president in 1972; serving as the college Director (President). ABAC was granted a new status as Assumption University (AU) by the Ministry of University Affairs on May 22, 1990. The naming of Assumption, besides its religious meaning in glorification of the Mother of Christ, has yet another meaning in Thai, namely ” the Abode of Abiding Knowledge” and rightly, “Assumption University” is the Seat of Wisdom.

Sedes Sapientiae: The Seat of Wisdom

It is a tradition handed down for centuries that Christians venerate the Mother of Christ as "the Seat of Wisdom". (Sedes Sapientiae) According to Christian belief, Christ is the wisdom seated on the Throne. This implies, on the one hand, that the Mother of Christ is the Dwelling Place of the Supreme Wisdom of all science. On the other hand, the university is the Alma Mater, or our Mother who is also the "Dwelling Place of Knowledge". In this context, "Assumption" which, besides its religious meaning in glorification of the Mother of Christ, has yet another meaning in Thai, namely" the Abode of Abiding Knowledge" Rightly, "Assumption University" is the Seat of Wisdom. The statue was blessed by Michael Cardinal Michai Kitbunchu on the 8th December 2000. On this same occasion the Cardinal also blessed other university buildings. A goldsmith was commissioned to craft a crown of pure gold for the statue of the Virgin Mary. On 15th August 2001 this gold crown was blessed by His Grace Bishop Lawrence Thienchai Samanchit. According to the Catholic Church calendar, the 15th of August is marked for the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. As the university bears the name of this august phenomenon, it is but proper that it should be celebrated with great devotion every year. To solemnize the occasion, in 2001, the President of the University has created a special ceremony to crown the statue on the eve of the Feast of the Assumption and to honour the Virgin Mary as Mother and Queen of the university.
