Bdo British Open
The British Open is one of the longest-running darts events, having started just a few months after the first ever Winmau World Masters. The tournament used to be televised by the BBC from its inception, but it ceased to cover the event after 1983. It was often held between Christmas and New Year - the 1975 Championship was actually played in late 1974. The tradition was maintained until near the millennium, when the organisers moved the tournament back to September/October. In recent years the tournament has been televised on Eurosport along with several other BDO tournaments that were previously untelevised. Bridlington Spa
Bridlington Spa is a dance hall, theatre and conference centre in Bridlington, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. Refurbished between 2006 and 2008 and further updated with a new branding in 2016, the venue boasts a large Art Deco ball room, Edwardian theatre, art gallery and a selection of other meeting and event spaces; all featuring outstanding views over Bridlington's South Bay. The original Spa on the site was built in 1896; which consisted of a theatre and seaside pavilion. A fire in 1906 saw the theatre destroyed and a replacement opera house was built in 1907 and still forms part of the building today. The local authority took control of the buildings in 1914, acquired it in 1919 and rebuilt all but the theatre in 1926. A further fire destroyed these later buildings in 1932 and work started almost immediately to construct their replacements. John Cosnett
Johnny "John" Cosnett (11 June 1951 – 23 April 2018) was an English professional darts player who competed in the 1980s & 1990s. He had one daughter (Jane) from his first marriage, and a son (Greg) and daughter (Kirsty) from his second to Cherry. Career Cosnett won the 1985 British Open, beating Welshman Peter Locke in the final. Despite winning one of the biggest prizes in the history of professional darts, Cosnett never managed to meet his new-found expectations, which took him to #16 in the World Rankings. He competed in the 1985 BDO World Darts Championship, and won the opening round against Rab Scott, but was defeated in the second round by his fellow Englishman John Lowe. He also competed in the 1985 Winmau World Masters, defeating Keith Deller in the first round, before losing to Steve Gittins in the last 16 stage. Roland Scholten
Roland Scholten (born 11 January 1965) is a Dutch former professional darts player who played in events of the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) and British Darts Organisation (BDO). Nicknamed The Tripod and The Flying Dutchman, Scholten turned full-time professional in 2001 having previously worked as a publican. Despite his Dutch nationality, Scholten speaks with a strong English accent having lived in Peterborough for several years. His considerable height and throwing technique means his darts hit the board at a considerably narrow angle. BDO career Scholten was runner-up in the 1992 Austrian Open, losing to Rod Harrington. He then won the 1993 WDF World Cup, beating Denmark's Troels Rusel in the final. Andy Fordham
Andrew Fordham (2 February 1962 – 15 July 2021) was an English professional darts player, commonly known as The Viking. He won the 2004 BDO World Darts Championship and the 1999 Winmau World Masters. Darts career Fordham made his first appearance on the stage at Lakeside in the 1995 BDO World Darts Championship and reached the semi-finals before losing to Richie Burnett. Another semi-final defeat followed in 1996, this time to Steve Beaton. On both these occasions, his victor then went on to claim the title. Second round defeats followed in 1997 (to Marshall James) and 1998 (to Raymond van Barneveld) before Fordham made it to the semi-final stage of the World Championship for third time in 1999, but was defeated by Ronnie Baxter. His 2000 campaign ended in the quarter-finals at the hands of Chris Mason and his fourth semi-final loss in 2001 was to Ted Hankey. Al Hedman
Alfanso "Al" Hedman (born 22 November 1953 from Jamaica) is a former Jamaican–born English professional darts player, who played in Professional Darts Corporation events. Career Hedman won the 1995 BDO British Open, defeating Andy Fordham of England. He qualified for the 1995 BDO European Darts Masters, but lost at the Last 24 stage to Bob Taylor of Scotland. Hedman lost to Paul Whitworth of England in the 1996 BDO Gold Cup. Hedman qualified for the 2003 PDC World Darts Championship, but lost at the Last-40 stage to Bob Anderson of England. He played in three stages of the UK Open, but losing at the Last-64 stage to Shayne Burgess of England. Hedman left the PDC in 2005. Stefan Nagy
Stefan Nagy (31 July 1951 – 23 June 2016) was a former Swedish darts player who competed in British Darts Organisation events. Career At the 1992 BDO World Darts Championship he was defeated 3–0 by Rod Harrington in the first round. 2002 saw Nagy's return to Lakeside, where he beat Gary Anderson in the first round 3-0 but lost in the last 16 to Wayne Mardle. He made his third and final appearance in 2003 where he lost in the first round to Andy Fordham. Injury Nagy's last tournament was the 2006 Finnish Open. Stefan Nagy had an accident with an electric motorbike in the summer of 2006 which left him paralyzed for six months (he broke his neck). He subsequently recovered sufficiently to be able to walk, but he was never able to play darts again due to his handicap. Death Nagy died of cancer on 23 June 2016. Martin Adams
Martin Adams (born 4 June 1956) is an English professional darts player who plays in World Darts Federation (WDF) events. Nicknamed "Wolfie", he is a three-time BDO World Champion and three-time World Masters champion. He represents Cambridgeshire at county darts level and was the captain of England from 1993 to 2013, the longest any player has held that role. From his debut in 1994, Adams made a record 25 consecutive World Championship appearances, before failing to qualify for the first time in 2019. Adams was diagnosed with prostate cancer in April 2016, but by the end of the year he was given the all-clear. As well as playing, he also acts as a regular pundit and commentator for televised coverage of BDO events. Darts career Adams was born in Sutton, Surrey and started his darts career in pubs. Dave Askew
Dave Askew (born 3 April 1963) is a former English professional darts player who competed in events of the British Darts Organisation (BDO) and Professional Darts Corporation (PDC). He is a two-time semi-finalist of the PDC World Championship (2001 and 2002), losing to eventual winner Phil Taylor on both occasions. Askew was never a full-time professional and earned his living as a bricklayer. Career BDO Askew first made his name in 1988 when he defeated Cliff Lazarenko 6–0 in sets to win the Denmark Open. In the same year, he also reached the final of the Swedish Open but lost out to Simon Duke. In 1989 Askew then won the French Open and lifted his first title on TV, the Cockney Classic when he defeated Steve Smith. Dennis Priestley
Dennis Priestley (born 16 July 1950) is an English former professional darts player. He has won two world championships, and was the first player to win both the BDO and WDC (now PDC) world championships, in 1991 and 1994 respectively. He is nicknamed "The Menace", after the cartoon character Dennis the Menace, and reflects this by wearing red and black, and using red and black flights. Early career Born in Mexborough, West Riding of Yorkshire, Priestley was originally a coal merchant by trade, and did not enter professional darts until he was almost 40 years old. Phil Gilman
Phillip "Phil" Gilman (born 25 December 1965) is a former English professional darts player. Darts career Gilman won the 1991 London Classic darts tournament champion beating Stephen Woodfield of Wales in the final. Gilman rose to prominence by winning the prestigious British Open in 1992, beating Craig Clancy, Paul Dillon and Dennis Priestley in the final. He made his television debut on the hit game show Bullseye, competing in the charity bronze bully round, scoring 200 points. Wayne Jones (darts Player)
Wayne Jones (born 24 April 1965) is an English professional darts player who plays in Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) tournaments. He uses the nickname The Wanderer for his matches. Career Jones started his career in the British Darts Organisation in the late 1980s and reached the final of the British Open in 1990 (losing to Alan Warriner and the British Classic in 2000 (losing to Ritchie Davies) - but his best achievement was reaching the final of the prestigious Winmau World Masters in 1999 when Andy Fordham ended his hopes of a first major title. Alan Warriner
Alan Warriner-Little (born Warriner; 24 March 1962) is an English former professional darts player. Nicknamed The Iceman, he is a former World Grand Prix champion and a former runner-up at the World Professional Darts Championship. Darts career Before coming to prominence as a darts professional, Warriner-Little appeared as a contestant in a 1987 edition of the ITV gameshow Bullseye whilst working as a State Enrolled Nurse on Ward 13 Upper at Lancaster Moor Hospital. He scored 257 the following year when he was invited back to throw for charity.
