Walkers Limited
Walkers Limited was an Australian engineering company, based in Maryborough, Queensland. It built ships and railway locomotives. The Walkers factory still produces railway locomotives and rolling stock as part of Downer Rail. History In 1863 John Walker and three friends set up the ''Union Foundry'' of John Walker & Co in Ballarat. In 1867 a branch was opened in Maryborough, Queensland, Maryborough. The Ballarat assets were disposed of in 1879 and in 1884, the business became a limited company under the title ''John Walker & Co Limited'', being renamed ''Walkers Limited'' in 1888. The company produced most of the parts for machinery at sugar mills. In 1980 Walkers Limited was sold to Evans Deakin and Company, Evans Deakin Industries. It was included in the purchase of Evans Deakin by Downer Group in March 2001 and today the Maryborough factory continues to operate as part of Downer Rail. Interurban Multiple Unit
The Interurban multiple units (IMU) are a class of electric multiple units manufactured by Walkers Limited/ Downer EDI Rail, Maryborough for Queensland Rail's Citytrain division between 1996 and 2011. The IMU is divided into in three subclasses, units 101-110 as the 100 series, units 121-124 as the 120 series, and units 161-188, as the 160 series. Design The Interurban Multiple Units are a long-distance optimised version of the Suburban Multiple Units. Internally, the IMUs differ from the SMUs, being fitted with larger seats, luggage racks and mobility-access toilets. Like most trains in the Citytrain fleet, two three-car IMUs can be coupled to form one six-car unit. HMAS ''Banks'' (GPV 901/Y266/G244/244) was an Explorer class general-purpose vessel of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), serving in a range of capacities from 1960 until 1995. Western Australian Government Railways (WAGR) was the operator of railway services in the state of Western Australia between October 1890 and June 2003. Owned by the state government, it was renamed a number of times to reflect extra responsibility for tram and ferry operations that it assumed and later relinquished. Emu Bay Railway
The Emu Bay Railway was a Tasmania, Australian railway company. The railway was significant during full operation, in that it linked the Tasmanian Government Railways system at Burnie with that at Zeehan that further linked to the Mount Lyell railway allowing connection through to Queenstown. It was listed on the Melbourne Stock Exchange. Following the closure of the Tasmanian government line at Zeehan railway station in 1960, until 1965, it operated the Melba Line on the West Coast of Tasmania following the closure of the Zeehan section until 1998. Queensland Railways DH Class
The DH class was a class of diesel-hydraulic locomotives built by Walkers Limited, Maryborough for Queensland Railways between 1966 and 1974. History In 1966, Queensland Railways tested a Walkers Limited built diesel-hydraulic shunting locomotive. This was later purchased and by 1974, the 73 DH class locomotives had taken over shunting duties in most Queensland yards. They were also used on short-distance freight services. With the closure of many freight yards and the move to longer trains, withdrawals started in the 1980s. A steam locomotive is a locomotive that provides the force to move itself and other vehicles by means of the expansion of steam.
