Walcourt (; wa, Walcoû) is a city and municipality of Wallonia located in the province of Namur, Belgium. On 1 January 2006 the municipality had 17,516 inhabitants. The total area is 123.18 km2, giving a population density of 142 inhabitants per km2. The municipality consists of the following districts: Berzée, Castillon, Chastrès, Clermont, Fontenelle, Fraire, Gourdinne, Laneffe, Pry, Rognée, Somzée, Tarcienne, Thy-le-Château, Vogenée, Walcourt, Yves-Gomezée. History The Basilica of Saint Maternus is a Gothic minor basilica, founded in 1026. It contains one of the oldest Madonnas in Western Christianity. Battle Of Walcourt
The Battle of Walcourt was fought on 25 August 1689 during the Nine Years' War. The action took place near the ancient walled town of Walcourt near Charleroi in the Spanish Netherlands, and brought to a close a summer of uneventful marching, manoeuvring, and foraging. The battle was a success for the Grand Alliance – the only significant engagement in the theatre during the campaign of 1689. The Allied army was commanded by the Prince of Waldeck; the French army by the duc de Humières. The battle incurred some 2,000 French casualties against the Allied losses of less than 700. The Allied victory had been an auspicious opening of the war for King William III and the Alliance, but for Humières, his military reputation received a fatal blow; in the following campaign of 1690, Humières was replaced by the duc de Luxembourg. Basilica Of Saint Maternus
The Basilica of Saint Maternus (french: Basilique Saint-Materne), also known as the basilica of Our Lady (''basilique Notre-Dame'') is a minor basilica in Walcourt, in the Namur Province of Belgium. According to legend, an oratory was founded here by Maternus of Cologne ( 285–315), who also carved a Madonna to replace an earlier pagan idol. The church does in fact contain a wooden Madonna, albeit from 950 to 1020, but still one of the oldest preserved Marian devotional statues in Western Christianity. The church was consecrated in 1026. The presence of the Madonna and its allegedly miraculous properties led to the development of the church into a pilgrimage site during the Middle Ages. Subsequently, the church was rebuilt into the Gothic edifice seen today between the 13th and 16th centuries. Yves-Gomezée
Yves-Gomezée ( wa, Ive) is a village of Wallonia and a district of the municipality of Walcourt, located in the province of Namur, Belgium. The area has been settled for a long time. The Gauls discovered iron ore and developed iron processing centres here, later taken over by the Romans and the Franks. The village church dates from 1400, and was partially rebuilt in a Neo-Gothic style in 1865. The chancel was destroyed in 1940 during World War II, but rebuilt after the war. Thy-le-Château
Thy-le-Château ( wa, Tî-l'-Tchestea) is a village of Wallonia and a district of the municipality of Walcourt, located in the province of Namur, Belgium. The village is mentioned for the first time in the archives of Lobbes Abbey in the 9th century. In 1190 it passed from the abbey to the Count of Hainaut. During the following centuries, the holding often switched owner and belonged to several of the most illustrious noble families of the region. From the 17th century, the village developed a metalworking industry. The village centre is dominated by the castle of Thy-le-Château, a large edifice which dates back to the 12th century. Chastrès is located by the ancient Roman road connecting Bavay and Trier. In 868, the village is mentioned as having certain obligations toward Lobbes Abbey.
