Wacol is a suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Wacol had a population of 3,761 people. Geography Wacol is bounded to the west by the Brisbane River and to the north loosely by Wolston Creek. It is south-west of the Brisbane central business district. The Brisbane-Ipswich railway line enters the suburb from the north-east ( Darra), via Wacol railway station in the centre of the locality () and Gailes railway station in the south-west of the locality (), before exiting to the south-west ( Goodna / Gailes). The suburb includes the undeveloped Cockatoo Island () in the Brisbane River. Termination Hill is a peak in the south of the suburb (). The Park Centre For Mental Health
The Park Centre for Mental Health is a heritage-listed psychiatric hospital at 60 Grindle Road, Wacol, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It is one of the largest psychiatric hospitals in Australia. The hospital provides a range of mental health services, including extended inpatient care, mental health research, education and a high security psychiatric unit. It was designed by Kersey Cannan and built from 1866 to 1923. It is also known as Goodna Hospital for the Insane, Goodna Mental Hospital, Woogaroo Lunatic Asylum, and Wolston Park Hospital Complex. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992. The Wolston Park Hospital Complex, opened in 1865, occupies a site on the banks of the Brisbane River at Wacol and encompasses a number of mental health facilities and ancillary services operated by the Queensland government since inception of the asylum. Wacol Railway Station
Wacol railway station is located on the Main line in Queensland, Australia. It serves the Brisbane suburb of Wacol. It is the last station on the Ipswich line located within Brisbane. History The Wolston railway station was opened on 8 October 1874, taking its name from nearby Wolston House. However, the name caused confusion with the Wilston railway station, so it was renamed on 8 July 1927 to Wacol railway station. ''Wacol'' is a coined word from ''weigh coal'', as the principal purpose of the station was coal handling. In 1998, the timber station building was replaced. In 2011, bright murals depicting domestic wildlife, forests and farmlands were painted on the walls of platforms buildings. Wolston House
Wolston House is a heritage-listed museum and former homestead at 223 Grindle Road, Wacol, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was built from 1852 to 1860s. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992. It is now a historic house museum operated by the National Trust of Queensland. History Wolston House comprises the homestead and garden from the Wolston Estate, a large pastoral property originally established by Dr Stephen Simpson in 1852 and extended during the 1860s by Matthew Goggs. Stephen Simpson was appointed Commissioner for Crown Lands for the Moreton Bay District in 1842 when the area was first opened up for free settlement following the closure of the penal colony. Carole Park is an industrial suburb in the City of Ipswich, Queensland, Australia. In the Carole Park had a population of 4 people.
