Torhout (; french: Thourout; vls, Toeroet) is a city and municipality located in the Belgian province of West Flanders. The municipality comprises the city of Torhout proper, the villages of Wijnendale and Sint-Henricus, and the hamlet of De Driekoningen. On January 1, 2012, Torhout had a total population of 20,149. The total area is 45.23 km² which gives a population density of 445 inhabitants per km². Rock Werchter
Rock Werchter is an annual music festival held in the village of Werchter, near Leuven, Belgium, since 1976 and is a large sized rock music festival. The 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2012 and 2014 festivals received the Arthur award for ''best festival in the world'' at the International Live Music Conference (ILMC). It can host 88,000 guests daily, of which 67,500 combine all four days, to add up to a total maximum of 149,500 different attendees. The festival started in 1974 as a one-day event with performances from Banzai and Kandahar, but over the years it has evolved to become one of Belgium's largest music festivals. Hilde Urbanie Julia Crevits (born 28 June 1967, in Torhout) is a Belgian politician from Flanders and member of the Christian Democratic and Flemish party who is currently the Flemish minister of Economy, Innovation, Work, Social economy and Agriculture. Crevits graduated from Ghent University as a Licentiate of Law in 1990 and subsequently became a lawyer. Crevits served on the provincial council of West Flanders from 1999 to 2004, when she was elected to the Flemish Parliament in the 2004 regional elections. From 2000 to 2007 she served as an alderman in Torhout. Karel Van Wijnendaele
Karel Van Wijnendaele, pseudonym of Carolus Ludovicius Steyaert (Torhout, 16 November 1882 - Deinze, 20 December 1961), was a Flemish sports journalist. He was the founder and first organizer of the Tour of Flanders cycling classic. Biography Van Wijnendaele was the fifth of 15 children of a family in the hamlet of Wijnendaele, near Torhout. Wijnendale is a village located in the Belgian province of West Flanders. It belongs to the municipality of Torhout. Wijnendale is situated at 4 km from the city center of Torhout, halfway in between this city center and Ichtegem. The village used to belong to the municipality of Ichtegem, but was moved to the municipality of Torhout in the 1970s. Josse Van Huerter
Joost De Hurtere (1430 in Torhout – 1495 in Horta), also known by several transliterations (such as ''Josse van Huerter, Josse van Hurtere'', ''Josse De Hurtere'' or ''Joss van Hürter'', and later in Portuguese, ''Joss de Utra'' or just ''Dutra'') was the first settler, and captain-major of the island of Faial in the Portuguese Azores. After 1482, the island of Pico was also incorporated into his captaincy. His son, Joss de Utra would later inherit the captaincy from him after his death. Biography Early life De Hurtere, a name of Flemish origin, appears frequently in Portuguese writings, frequently with many variations. What is known, is that the family name De Hurtere evolved through Portuguese transliteration to Utra and later Dutra (a contraction of De Utra, "Of Utra"). International Holocaust Cartoon Contest was a 2006 cartoon competition sponsored by the Iranian newspaper ''Hamshahri'', to denounce what it called "Western hypocrisy on freedom of speech". The event was staged in response to the ''Jyllands-Posten'' Muhammad cartoons controversy. Several public figures, including the United States State Department, the Israeli Foreign Ministry, and United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan strongly criticized the contest. Benny Vansteelant
Benny Vansteelant (19 November 1976 – 14 September 2007) was a Belgian duathlete. For the first decade of the 21st century he was the uncontested icon of Duathlon, winning more than 80% of the races he started at. Life He was born in Torhout. A book describing his early life and his rise to the top of the duathlon scene has been published in Dutch ( "Meneer Duatlon"). On September 8, 2007, Vansteelant was hit by a car during training on his bike. He suffered a broken leg, facial injuries, a torn spleen and damage to lungs and heart. In the days after the accident, he seemed to recover well and was getting close to leaving the intensive care section of the hospital in Roeselare on September 13. But one day later, Vansteelant suffered a cardiac arrest. Despite receiving CPR in time, he died of a pulmonary embolism in the early morning. Brahim Attaeb better known by his stage name and mononym Brahim (born in Torhout, Belgium on 24 February 1984), is a Belgian R&B singer and presenter of Moroccan descent. Music career Brahim became famous when he participated in Belgian first inaugural season of the '' Idool'' series, the Belgian Flanders version of the Idol series. He finished fourth overall.
