Tokke
Tokke is a municipality in Telemark in the county of Vestfold og Telemark in Norway. It is part of the traditional region of Vest-Telemark. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Dalen. The municipality of Tokke was created on 1 January 1964 upon the merger of the two older municipalities of Lårdal and Mo. Located in Lårdal, Eidsborg stave church is one of Norway's old stave churches. General information Name The name originally belongs to the river running through the municipality. The Old Norse form of the river name must have been ''Þotka'' and it is related to the name of the lake Totak (which it comes from). Dalen, Telemark
Dalen is the administrative centre of Tokke municipality, Norway. Its population ( SSB 2005) is 801. Dalen is located on and around the delta where the river Tokke flows into the west end of the lake Bandak. Dalen is the westernmost endpoint of the Telemark Canal which runs to Skien in the east, and became a tourist site with the canal traffic. Dalen Hotel, built in 1894, is among the largest wooden buildings in Norway. Lårdal
Lårdal is a village in Tokke Municipality in Vestfold og Telemark county, Norway. The village is located on the north shore of the lake Bandak and about south of the village of Høydalsmo and the European route E134 highway. The village is the site of Lårdal Church, a school, and a fast food store. Previously, there was also a grocery store, but it closed because the local population couldn't support it. Lårdal is also home to the former journalist and television presenter Bjørn Honerød. Vest-Telemark
The Vest-Telemark traditional district of Norway comprises the upper and western areas of the larger region of Upper Telemark in the county of Vestfold og Telemark. The region consists of six municipalities: Fyresdal, Tokke, Vinje, Nissedal, Kviteseid and Seljord. Vest-Telemark belongs to the traditional region Upper Telemark. The region is known for its folk traditions within music, clothing, handcrafts, food and architecture. The region is also distinctly marked by its dialects of Norwegian. Telemark
Telemark is a traditional region, a former county, and a current electoral district in southern Norway. In 2020, Telemark merged with the former county of Vestfold to form the county of Vestfold og Telemark. Telemark borders the traditional regions and former counties of Vestfold, Buskerud, Hordaland, Rogaland and Aust-Agder. Mo, Telemark
Mo is a former municipality in Telemark county, Norway. The municipality existed from 1838 until its dissolution in 1964. The area is now part of Tokke Municipality. The administrative centre was the village of Vistad which is located just west of the present village of Dalen. History The parish of Mo was established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt law). In 1879, there was a small border adjustment where a part of Laardal Municipality (population: 6) was transferred to Mo Municipality. During the 1960s, there were many municipal mergers across Norway due to the work of the Schei Committee. On 1 January 1964, Mo Municipality (population: 1,658) and Lårdal Municipality (population: 1,929) were merged to form a new municipality called Tokke. Eidsborg Stavkirke 2000
Eidsborg is a village and parish in the municipality of Tokke in Telemark county, Norway. It is located at the northern side of the lake Bandak. The Eidsborg Stave Church, from the 13th century, is located in the parish, and the Vest-Telemark Museum is located nearby. At the museum is Vindlausloftet from about 1167, originally from the farm Vindlaus, the oldest secular tree building in Norway. For hundreds of years there was a quarry industry in Eidsborg. Whetstones were transported to Skien on the ice during winter, and further by ship. Talleiv Huvestad
Talleiv Olavson Huvestad (1761 – 13 July 1847) was a Norwegian teacher, farmer and politician. Talleiv Olavson Huvestad was born on the Storaasli farm in the parish of Skafså in Øvre Telemark, Norway, the son of Olaf Tollefsson Storaasli (1724-1778) and Torbjør Gjermundsdotter Kjestveit (1734-1805). When his father died in his youth, he and his mother moved to the parish of Eidsborg in Tokke in Vest-Telemark where his mother married Vetle Huvestad. In 1794 he took over the Huvestad farm and on 7 November 1797 married Gjertud Rasmusdotter Mandt (1778-1845). They had 8 children. Besides farming, he served as a part-time teacher in rural Telemark villages. He acquired a special knowledge of health and justice and taught other farmers who sent their sons to him for training. He became deputy chairman of the village, and helped organize legal documents for other farmers. With his acquired health care skills, he served as both veterinarian and general practitioner. Eidsborg Stave Church
Eidsborg Stave Church ( no, Eidsborg stavkyrkje) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Tokke Municipality in Vestfold og Telemark county, Norway. It is located in the village of Eidsborg. It is one of the churches for the ''Eidsborg, Mo, og Skafså'' parish which is part of the Øvre Telemark prosti ( deanery) in the Diocese of Agder og Telemark. The brown, wooden stave church was built in a long church design around the year 1250 using plans drawn up by an unknown architect. The church seats about 70 people. Eidsborg Stave Church is one of the best preserved Norwegian stave churches. The church is located next to the Vest-Telemark Museum in Eidsborg. The church is still in use as a parish church, but it is a popular tourist site as well. Totak
Totak is a lake in the municipality of Vinje in Vestfold og Telemark county, Norway. The lake is part of the Skien river watershed ( Skiensvassdraget), discharging via the river Tokke to lake Bandak. At 306 m Totak is the 10th deepest lake in Norway; this tremendous overdeepening marks it as a glacially formed lake with characteristics similar to a fjord. Vestfold Og Telemark
Vestfold og Telemark (; ) is a county under disestablishment in Norway. The county is the southernmost one of Eastern Norway and consists of two distinct and separate traditional regions: the former counties of Telemark and (most of) Vestfold. The capital is located at the town of Skien, which is also the county's largest city. While Skien is the seat of the county municipality, the seat of the County Governor is Tønsberg. It borders the counties of Viken, Vestland, Rogaland and Agder. Telemark voted against the merger, on the basis that the regions have nothing in common and do not constitute a natural geographical, cultural, social or political entity. Fyresdal is a municipality in Telemark in the county of Vestfold og Telemark in Norway. It is part of the traditional region of Vest-Telemark.
