In its present form Timbro was founded in 1978 by Sture Eskilsson and the Swedish Employers’ Association, a precursor to the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise.  Since 2003, Timbro is being financed by the . Sture Eskilsson
Sture Birger Eskilsson (18 March 1930 – 5 March 2016) was a Swedish economist who was the Director of Information of the Swedish Employers Association ( sv, Svenska arbetsgivareförening, ''SAF'') and chairman of the think tank Timbro. He was born in Kristinehamn. Eskilsson was employed at SAF as an economist in 1957. In 1968 he was transferred to SAF:s Department of Public Relations. There he was commissioned to set up a new strategy in order to create a counterweight against the increasing influence of the New Left movement. In 1970, Eskilsson was appointed as Director of Information of SAF and the following year he outlined his strategic thoughts in an internal memo on what needed to be done in order to influence the public opinion and create a stronger support for free market capitalism, enterprise and individual liberty. Marie Cecilia Stegö Chilò (; born 25 March 1959) was the Swedish Minister for Culture for ten days, from 6 to 16 October 2006. Prior to her appointment as a cabinet member she was Chief executive officer of the , and Director of Timbro, a neoliberal, free-market think-tank. Mats Erik Johansson (26 December 1951 – 24 June 2017) was a Swedish journalist and politician. He was a member of the Moderate Party and served as a member of the Riksdag from 2006 to 2014. He was also a delegate in the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the War Delegation. Johansson was a Delegate to The Parliamentary Assembly of The Council of Europe (PACE), Standing Rapporteur on Media Freedom, PACE, Member of the Board of The Public Service Companies Owner Foundation, and Chairman and founder of Stockholm Free World Forum, a foreign policy think-tank. Mattias Svensson
Mattias Svensson (born 5 October 1972 in Karlskrona) is a Swedish libertarian writer and political commentator. He is currently a freelance writer and journalist, writing for several Swedish newspapers and magazines, including Dagens Nyheter and Aftonbladet. He used to work as an editor at the Swedish libertarian magazine ''Neo'', which was closed down in 2015. In his youth, Svensson was active in the Moderate Youth League, the youth wing of the Swedish Moderate Party. Benjamin Arif Dousa (born 5 December 1992) is a Swedish politician of the Moderate Party. He was the national chairman of the Moderate Youth League from 2016 to 2020. He was re-elected to the position on 24 November 2018. Life and career Dousa was born on December 5, 1992 in Rinkeby, Stockholm. Rose Director Friedman (; born Rose Director (December 1910 – 18 August 2009), was a free-market economist and co-founder of the Milton and Rose D. Friedman Foundation.
