''The Portrait of a Lady'' is a novel by Henry James, first published as a serial in ''The Atlantic Monthly'' and '' Macmillan's Magazine'' in 1880–81 and then as a book in 1881. It is one of James's most popular novels and is regarded by critics as one of his finest. ''The Portrait of a Lady'' is the story of a spirited young American woman, Isabel Archer, who, "affronting her destiny," finds it overwhelming. She inherits a large amount of money and subsequently becomes the victim of Machiavellian scheming by two American expatriates. Like many of James's novels, it is set in Europe, mostly England and Italy. Generally regarded as the masterpiece of James's early period, this novel reflects James's continuing interest in the differences between the New World and the Old, often to the detriment of the former. Henry James ( – ) was an American-British author. He is regarded as a key transitional figure between literary realism and literary modernism, and is considered by many to be among the greatest novelists in the English language. He was the son of Henry James Sr. and the brother of philosopher and psychologist William James and diarist Alice James. Barbara O'Neil
Barbara O'Neil (July 17, 1910 – September 3, 1980) was an American film and stage actress. She appeared in the film ''Gone with the Wind'' (1939) and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in ''All This, and Heaven Too'' (1940). Nicola Bradbury
Nicola Anne Lulham Bradbury D. Phil. (born 1951) is an English literary critic, lecturer, editor, and author, specializing in the 19th century novel. Life Bradbury was born in Weston-super-Mare, the daughter of Robin J. Bradbury and Joan Lulham, who had married in 1949. She was the middle child of a family of three, with an older brother, Peter, and a younger brother, Christopher. Talat Hussain (actor)
Talat Hussain Warsi, is a Pakistani actor. He is the son of Altaf Hussain Warsi and Shaista Begum who was one of the pioneering voices of Radio Pakistan, Karachi. Career Hussain has worked in several foreign films, television drama serials and long plays, including Channel Four's television serial ''Traffik'' and '' Family Pride.'' In a career spanning more than 50 years, she has played a variety of roles on television and in cinema in several genres, including westerns and comedies.
