TVNZ 7
TVNZ 7 was a commercial-free New Zealand 24-hour news and information channel on Freeview digital television platform and on Sky Television from 1 July 2009. It was produced by Television New Zealand, which received Government funding to launch two additional channels. The channel went to air just after 10am on 25 March 2008 with a looped preview reel. The channel was officially launched at noon on 30 March 2008 with a special "kingmaker" political debate held within the Parliament building and featuring most of the elected minor party leaders. The channel went off air at midnight on 30 June 2012 to the Goodnight Kiwi. It featured TVNZ News Now updates every hour from 6am to 11pm, with a specialised 'zone' between 6am and 9am on weekdays, throughout which ten-minute bulletins were aired back-to-back. TVNZ 1 ( mi, Te Reo Tātaki Tahi) is the first national television channel owned and operated by the state-owned broadcaster Television New Zealand (TVNZ). It is the oldest television broadcaster in New Zealand, starting out from 1960 as independent channels in the four main centres of Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, networking in 1969 to become NZBC TV (although the individual facilities retained their call signs into the 1970s). TVNZ Sport Extra was a temporary sports television station in New Zealand, operated by TVNZ. Broadcasting on channel 20 on Freeview, it showed live and delayed free-to-air coverage of selected events. Eric Kearley, TVNZ's Digital Launch Manager, has stated there was no further plans for this channel until the 2008 Summer Olympics. TVNZ 6 was a digital-only, commercial-free television channel operated by Television New Zealand. It launched in September 2007, and was available in 60.3% of New Zealand homes on the Freeview and SKY Television Digital platforms. TVNZ 6 was on air daily from 6AM to 12 Midnight. The name TVNZ 6 was chosen because it was numeric, was deemed to allow 'a broader content structure than any descriptive title', and matches the number assigned to it on the Freeview electronic programme guide. Schedule TVNZ 6 showed pre-school programs during the Kidzone block from 6am to 6pm. Until its closure at the end of June 2012, TVNZ 7 aired Kidzone from 6am to 8am. TVNZ Duke ( mi, Te Reo Tātaki Tiuka), formerly Duke and stylized as TVNZ DUKE or DUKE, is a New Zealand television channel run by state broadcaster Television New Zealand. U (TV Channel)
U was an interactive youth-oriented New Zealand television channel, owned and operated by TVNZ. The channel launched on 13 March 2011, and featured reality programming, as well as an interactive live show and music content. It replaced the now defunct TVNZ 6. Leading up to the launch of U, there were 13 days' worth of promotional videos and programming information aired to advertise the new channel. Initially, U closed down every night at midnight, playing the Goodnight Kiwi animation to signal the end of nightly broadcast. During its closedown period of 12-midnight to 12-noon, the channel looped a video of non-stop dancing with text reading U 'returns at midday'. From February 2012, the channel began broadcasting infomercials from midnight until midday, except on Saturday and Sunday mornings, when it is illegal to broadcast adverts. TVNZ Heartland
TVNZ Heartland was a pay TV channel operated by TVNZ featuring only New Zealand made shows, mostly reruns of classic shows as well as more recent shows. While TVNZ channels are traditionally available free to air, TVNZ Heartland was only available to Sky Digital subscribers. The channel was broadcast on Sky Digital channel 17. Heartland launched on 1 June 2010, 50 years to the day that TV broadcasting began in New Zealand. The first show introduced ''From the Archives'', a compilation series of five decades of classic New Zealand TV shows. In 2015, it was announced that TVNZ Heartland would permanently close down on 31 May that year, after TVNZ and Sky decided not to renew broadcast agreements.
