Swissair AG/ S.A. (German: Schweizerische Luftverkehr-AG; French: S.A. Suisse pour la Navigation Aérienne) was the national airline of Switzerland between its founding in 1931 and bankruptcy in 2002. It was formed from a merger between Balair and Ad Astra Aero (''To the Stars''). For most of its 71 years, Swissair was one of the major international airlines and known as the "Flying Bank" due to its financial stability, causing it to be regarded as a Swiss national symbol and icon. It was headquartered at Zürich Airport, Kloten. Swissair Asia AG was a subsidiary of Swissair founded due to the legal status of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and territory disputes with the People's Republic of China in order to allow Swissair to continue flying to Taiwan from Switzerland. History Swissair Asia was formed to serve Taipei, Taiwan, within the Republic of China, while Swissair was maintaining service to the People's Republic of China. It began operating a twice-weekly service between Zürich and Taipei via Bangkok on 7 April 1995. The airline ceased operating when their parent company Swissair went bankrupt in 2001. Qualiflyer was a frequent flyer program and to some extend an airline alliance created in April 1992 by Austrian Airlines, Crossair and Swissair. When Swissair began acquiring stakes in other European airlines in 1998, Qualiflyer was extended to become their frequent flyer programs as well. This spawned the alliance known as The Qualiflyer Group. Lockheed Model 9 Orion
The Lockheed Model 9 Orion is a single-engined passenger aircraft built in 1931 for commercial airlines. It was the first airliner to have retractable landing gear and was faster than any military aircraft of that time. Designed by Richard A. von Hake, it was the last wooden monoplane design produced by the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation. Design The Orion was the last design using many identical elements from the Lockheed designs preceding it. It primarily used all the elements of the Altair, but included a forward top cockpit similar to the Vega, plus the NACA cowling introduced in the Air Express. Lockheed used the same basic fuselage mold and wing for all these wooden designs (the Explorer wing was unique), hence the close similarities between them. Mario Corti (born Lausanne, October 22, 1946) is a Swiss businessman who acted as chairman of Swissair. Early years and education In 1975, Corti earned a master's degree in business administration from Harvard Business School. He earned a doctorate in economics from the University of Lausanne. Career After graduation from Harvard Business School, Corti worked as a business planner for Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corporation in California. Following his return to his home country in 1977, he worked first at the Swiss National Bank and then as Under Secretary for Foreign Trade. In 1990, he accepted a position with Nestlé USA and became chief financial officer in 1996. In April 2000, Corti left Nestle and joined SwissAir.
