Sundarikalum Sundaranmarum
''Sundarikalum Sundaranmarum'' (''The Beautiful and the Handsome'') is a 1958 Malayalam novel written by Uroob (P. C. Kuttikrishnan). ''Sundarikalum Sundaranmarum'' along with '' Ummachu'' are considered the best works by Uroob and are ranked among the finest novels in Malayalam. Plot summary The novel has about thirty characters belonging to three generations of eight families belonging to Malabar during the end of the First World War, when the famous Moplah rebellion broke out in Kerala. Publication ''Sundarikalum Sundaranmarum'' was serialised in ''Mathrubhumi Weekly'' in 1954 and was published as a book in 1958. It was translated into English by Susila Mishra under the title ''The Beautiful and the Handsome''. The original title ''Sundarikalum Sundaranmarum'' can be literally transliterated as ''Men and Women of Charm''. Uroob
Parutholli Chalappurathu Kuttikrishnan, popularly known by his pen name Uroob ( ml, ഉറൂബ്; 1915 – 1979) was an Indian writer of Malayalam literature. Along with Basheer, Thakazhi, Kesavadev, and Pottekkatt, Uroob was counted among the progressive writers in Malayalam during the twentieth century. He was known for his novels such as Sundarikalum Sundaranmarum and Ummachu, short stories like ''Rachiyamma'' and the screenplays of a number of Malayalam films including '' Neelakuyil'', the first Malayalam feature film to receive the National Film Award. He was a recipient of several honours including Kendra Sahithya Academy Award and the inaugural Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Novel. Biography P. C. The Kerala Sahitya Akademi or Academy for Malayalam literature is an autonomous body established to promote the Malayalam language and literature. It is situated in City of Thrissur, Kerala in India. History The academy was inaugurated on 15 October 1956, by Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, the former king of Travancore, in Thiruvananthapuram. It was shifted to its present location at City of Thrissur in September, 1957. Sahitya Akademi Award
The Sahitya Akademi Award is a literary honour in India, which the Sahitya Akademi, India's National Academy of Letters, annually confers on writers of the most outstanding books of literary merit published in any of the 22 languages of the 8th Schedule to the Indian constitution as well as in English and Rajasthani language. Established in 1954, the award comprises a plaque and a cash prize of ₹ 1,00,000. The award's purpose is to recognise and promote excellence in Indian writing and also acknowledge new trends. The annual process of selecting awardees runs for the preceding twelve months. The plaque awarded by the Sahitya Akademi was designed by the Indian film-maker Satyajit Ray.
